Headlight Motor

I am in need of a new or excellent rebuilt driver's side headlight motor for my 90 Reatta. Any good sources. Have seen a few on ebay but not sure of the quality.

Thanks

Gary

PS Just read posts after doing a search for headlight motor. My motor still runs fine just that the headlight door sometimes doesn't open completely and motor run for 5 or 6 seconds after open. Sounds like I might have a problem with bellcrank and bushings. I see two differet types of Reatta bushing sets available on ebay. Can someone tell me the difference. Where do I get a bellcrank?

Did I almost answer my own question? That is a little scary.

The headlight rebuild procedure will take you step by step, from opening the hood, to the end. I am working with a model maker on stainless steel brackets to fix the bellcrank, but have no idea when he will have the tool complete.

I still rebuild headlight motors, and have spares if you want to order motors before removing yours. Price is $50.00 exchange.

Anyone that has worked on a headlight motor will know there is about a 95% chance that you will twist off at least one of the screw heads. I could charge less for the rebuild if this were not the case. It takes an extra 15-30 minutes to salvage each broken screw. Worse case, I have had one motor that had 4 of the 5 screws break.

Thanks for the replys. Barney, Does your motor contain a new or repaired bushings and bell crank or is it just the Motor? As mine is my daily driver I can't be without a headlight.

Thanks

Gary

There are two components here, Bellcranks-still available from GM (I Think) The Motor consists of The Motor and the Gearbox. The problem you're encountering sounds to us like a worn out bellcrank. The repair article shows you how to make splints to take all the slop out of the interface between the Shaft and the Bellcrank Arm. A couple of hundred dollars to General Motors will gear you up with fresh all the way round, or you can go the do-it-yourself repair option.

If your motor is running then it is most likely the bushings , I changed mine and it works perfectly. The ones you find on ebay for Corvettes and Reatta's are the same. Go to www.buickreattaparts.com for hard to find parts. It is kind of a pain to change them but once it is done then you won't have any problems for the forseeable future. You will need a couple Torx screwdrivers to remove the headlight cover, if you need the sizes the guy at the mentioned website can tell you.

Last time I purchased bellcranks, they were $55 retail from the dealer.

The part number is 16510108.

As I mentioned in another post, I am working with a model maker on a tool to make a repair part from stainless steel for the bellcrank. This is a version of the formed bracket with an extruded hole for longer life. Not knowing how long GM will continue to make the bellcranks, I feel we need a fix and the bracket will last as long as an expensive bellcrank.

I will post a note when the parts are available.

 • 2 months later...

My motor is working fine, it seems there is something in the way of the light opening on the passenger side. I hit a pothole tonight, and the same light just fell closed!!

On the driver side, I was cleaning the light and noticed the black plastic housing around the light is cracked Are these readily available??
