To open the door try using a "Slim Jim:" Your auto club, or any tow driver should be familiar with using them. From the outside of the door, no need to take off the door card. If you can force the little tube between the door window top seal,spray some WD40  in the direction of the door lock mechanism. I bought my Slim Jim at Harbor Freight, they called it an emergency door unlocking tool. It can be construed to be an auto burglary tool, but most cops are too young to have dealt with them! 

Best of luck with your project, I was one of the guys that said that this would be a great affordable project for a young guy. Glad to see someone pick up the tool box instead of the checkbook!
