Guest
Buick Enthusiasts,I'm Stefan Knappe from Germany and own a 1966 Skylark conv. with the 300cid V8 engine.Last weekend the water pump started to leak. I ordered a new one from an US auto parts store. It came today, but the one delivered is different from the one on my car. The difference is the length of the shaft, that means the new pump is about 1 inch shorter then the original one. Everything else is the same. The pulley can not be fitted to the flange, as it's too deep and will touch the new water pump's housing. The parts guy at the store says that the pump I got is the only one available. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />I took some pictures of my old water pump (removed) and put them on my webiste, go to water pump pix Could anyone please give me tips how to get the correct water pump for my Buick? For example other applications or parts numbers? Thanks in advance for any info you may give!Kindest regards from GermanyStefan
palbuick
More than likely the pump they sent you is from a 350 ci motorThere are many parts that interchange between the 300, 340 and 350 motorsThe timing chain covers will fit all motors. Check with some of the Buick vendors, and get a correct pump.Gets a little expensive with the shipping.Jim Schilf / palbuick@aol.com

The Old Guy
The pump you had on the engine is from a 71 up 350. The pump you were sent is the right pump for your engine. The 71 pump has larger bearings amd is a better pump. I made the same change on my 69. By using the later pump and pulley it is a direct bolt on. The later pump is also much more available,The original pump used a pulley with less offset.
Guest
Hello all, thank you very much for your help! It seems that indeed some time in the past a shop has converted the engine to the later style (71 up 350cid) water pump.Since I do not have the original pulley, I will stay with this conversion and order the later style pump. I already talked to the shop, they hope to have it here till thursday. I'll let you know what comes out. Many thanks once again, with best regards from GermanyStefan
Guest
Dear Buicksters,I got water pump AW971 for the 1971 350 cid engine, but still a bit too short. I used the flange of the old pump to make a spacer, put it between the new pumps's flange and the pulley. Had to get four new bolts because the old ones were too short now. Everything's good now, all pulleys line up perfectly. I drove my Buick yesterday for 200+ miles without any problem. Thanks again to all, with best regards from GermanyStefan
