John Lynn
Hello from NZ. I have recently finished the restoration of my 1920 Davis Phaeton Tourer. It runs a Continental 7R engine. Having problems with water pump but have always wanted to get a spares engine to have in reserve. Very difficult to find. Some Moon cars also run the same engine. Welcome any enquires. Bud Tierney
Your 7R quickly replaced by 8R, a 3 3/8 using same valves and bearings. Davis and many others in PF's list above used both. Auburn Elcar and Moon have clubs, members there should be able to advise if 8R dropin fit. 8R also used in various trucks to 1931. Larr991
What type of problem are you having with the water pump?
John Lynn
Looks like the shaft has pitted over time and leaks water when stationary. I have packed the water pump shaft and this has worked to some degree and does not leak when the engine is running. I am trying to avoid taking the pump off completely as I have to remove the engine to gain access for its removal.
Larr991
Ok, yes, it is quite a chore to get the shaft off, but it can be done. Thats probably the only way to stop it from leaking. i have an 8r, looking for an impeller, or someone who has one that i can recast. i had a fellow here answer me but have contacted him several times with only promises. I'll keep my eyes out for you on a spare engine!
John Lynn
Thank you. My current engine runs fine. Only travelled 45000 miles and when I pulled it down during the restoration I only put new rings in it and put it back together. No wear on any other parts apart from the water pump leak. Bud Tierney
Just out of curiosity, ask other 7r owners if they know Y the 7R disappeared so quickly...a fatal flaw? Or just underpowered and board out to 3 3/8?
