Larry Schramm
I would recommend taking the oil pan off the vehicle. You never know what else you might find on the bottom end of engine including things like plugged pick up screens, etc...
Rusty_OToole
I agree that it would be best to take the pan off if the car has been out of commission for years. Should not be too hard if there is no cross member under the pan. If you don't want to do that try warming up the engine and changing the oil, using light oil like 10W30 detergent oil. Change it after 500 or 1000 miles. After 2 or 3 changes the inside of the engine should be clean. I do not recommend any kind of solvent or flushing compound. They can do more harm than good. If there is any sign of water in the oil change it first before you try to start it. And take the pan off if you can.

Rusty_OToole
By the way when your Rockne was made they recommended changing oil every 1000 miles if you do not have an oil filter. With an oil filter and air filter you can go longer. Especially these days when we drive on paved roads not dirt or gravel.
Rusty_OToole
Could you take it to a mechanic or get someone to help?
