68LTD
My friend asked me to see if I can ease the force needed to get out of 1st gear. I do not see how 2nd/3rd gears are even engaged. The 2/3 lever at column has a rod that goes in a 'groove' of the 1/R lever. Very weird. Wow. Any clues?? Car is driveable, I am reluctant to do anything since I do not see how it functions!! This car has no vacuum assist as some had. Thnx Tom in VA
Oldtech
There is a "toggle" on the transmission that is activated by pulling the lever back. It uses the one rod for R-1 when the toggle is back, 2 and 3 when ahead. These are not a great shifting unit at best.
Oregon Desert model 45
Check rear motor mounts for wear. When these get old the motor sags which affects the shift rod adjustment. Next check the shift linkage rod bushings for wear and replace if they are sloppy. Don't start adjusting the shift rod lengths unless you know what you are doing. Below are a couple of relevant pages from the Chevrolet 1942-1948 shop manual which is probably unchanged from 1940. Does your friend have the 1940 manual ? 68LTD
Mr OldTech, I think you are 100% correct. It actually shifts pretty good, so I did not touch!! I did increase the idle speed, which helped a bunch.
