As a retirement project, it was purchased to be an all-around enjoyable secondary “driver”, not an ornament. Being in 100% original condition, including in its original black lacquer paint, it was intended to be cosmetically restored with new paint, chrome, and drivers bench seat (the rear seat is immaculate). However due to failing eyesight, (Macular Degeneration) my father was forced to stop driving in 2009. At only 42K+ miles when purchased (have photocopy of the “Actual Mileage” Pennsylvania title) the car ran beautifully, and still does. Lead additive was always used in the gasoline by both us and the previous owner to protect the valve train. Shortly after purchase, the front-end running gear was rehabbed affording it excellent handling for a car of its vintage. The two larger projects were 1) replacement of the exhaust system with the correct spec parts, and 2) a full overhaul of the braking system from the power booster at the pedal, down to the brake pads. You will see in the pictures that the trunk is in original like-new condition. Even though the chrome on the outside of the car is very weak, any anodized aluminum parts are in beautiful condition (this year Olds had the classic anodized aluminum “music clef design” on the quarter panels of all models). The chrome inside the car is still very nice. Any pot metal chrome parts are in fair – good condition. The only real rust on the body are baseball sized areas at the bottom of both fenders; very minor metal repair needed for paint. The 55er
Having owned an identical car (except for color) back in the day I can state there is no anodized aluminum trim anywhere on the outside of the car, it's all chrome & stainless. The cost of rechroming the bumpers and pot metal trim though will be quite expensive today. The seller says the car runs beautifully but it appears to have been sitting idle in the garage for quite some time. If it's been 20 years since the car's been driven it's due for another full overhaul of the braking system as well as a thorough inspection of the exhaust components. With the low mileage and originality of the car it looks like a good candidate for restoration by the right person.
kingrudy
Really like this car, but the cost to restore and the value when it is done doesn't add up.
