Guffin
I am trying to restore the heat valve between the exhaust manifold and exhaust tube on my Buick 32-87. I have the housing for the valve. The inner hole for the valve shaft is closed by welding. In the outer hole is a screwed-in brass piece with a small cylindric, sticking out, steel piece. This piece has a hole in which a spring is attached to the housing. The spring seames to have no function. I have seen this spring in the manual for the car so it must have some purpose. My questions are: 1: Should the valve shaft run in this outer bushing? 2: What purpose has the little sticking out part and spring? Is it a part of the valve shaft (now missing)?3: Should there be a bronze or stainless steel bussing for the inner shaft bearing? I will make the shaft in stainless steel.Jan
critterpainter
You are better off NOT trying to restore function to the valve. Do not put the damper back into it and don't try to force the exhaust around the heat riser assy above the carburator as the modern fuel just does not need it. my 2 cents Bill
