1953 GMC Hydra-Matic
I need some advice please. I have a new battery and have had my generator checked out. When I have the car running the amp gauge show negative charging. When I put the amp tester on it shows crazy readings on both the battery and generator. Then when I shut the car off the battery doesn’t have enough power to restart the car. I should be able to figure it out but I can’t. Can someone please let me know what I am doing wrong. As usual thanks for all help! Dennis
rbk
Are you sure that you are hooking the battery up correctly. Unless someone messed with it it should be positive ground. Did you polerize the generator ?. https://forum.studebakerdriversclub.com/forum/your-studebaker-forum/tech-talk/62519-polarizing-the-generator https://studebaker-info.org/text3/polarizing.html Edited March 29, 2020 by rbk (see edit history)
1953 GMC Hydra-Matic
Thanks. It is a1936 Studebaker Dictator 3ACoupe. It has a cutout on the generator. To polarize the generator I take a wire, connect one end to the generator and touch the other end to the negative side of the battery? Correct? Yes positive ground. rbk
I believe that a 1936 Dictator has a voltage regulator. What is the number on the tag of your generator. 1934 was the last year for a cutout , so maybe someone put an older generator on your car. Again I did not research this but the generator tag will help.

rbk
Sorry I have not been on this forum for awhile. I do not know how to polarize your generator. I will have to study that generator number you gave. Maybe someone on this forum can pitch in and help.
1953 GMC Hydra-Matic
I had the generator checked out again last week and it works correctly. It has a cut out. They told me that I need to ground the engine to the body. They said that I have a ground problem . Thanks
