AZVET
I recently replaced my intake manifold and managed to mess up the metal pipe that goes from the lower part of the passenger side manifold to the heater hose. I discovered a leak when I filled the radiator with new coolant. As the radiator filled up the coolant leaked at the heater pipe/intake manifold junction. Engine off at the time and engine was stone cold. And yes, I installed a new O ring at that junction. I always thought that no coolant entered the engine until the thermostat opened. Fortunately our friend Jim Finn was able to get me a good used pipe quickly and at a decent price. He even painted it so it looked like new! Jim has saved my bacon again! D-a-n-i-e-l
Thermostat allows coolant to leave the engine and once it hits a set temp. If it went the other way your heater would take forever to warm up.
