John Loney
Does anyone know if the overdrive unit on a '39 straight eight car (Imperial, New Yorker or Saratoga) is the same for a manual "cruise & climb" transmission as it is for a "Fluid Drive" transmission? That is to say, could the overdrive unit be used with either transmission? Could it also be used on a Royal C22 six cylinder car? Thanks!
Spinneyhill
Wikipedia says "A conventional clutch and three-speed or four-speed manual transmission was installed behind the fluid coupling," so I would expect the only difference might be the drive shaft length and the pinion shaft (main drive gear) if the fluid coupling bell housing was longer. According to The Hollander, the C22 used case 1T86-1 without overdrive and case T86A-1 with overdrive;the C23 Imp. used case T85A-1 w/o o/d and T85A-1A w. o/d; andthe C24 Imp. used only case T85A-1A w. o/d.Thus C23 and C24 w. o/d used the same case. But what about the o/d? The Hollander doesn't mention them. Complete sets of gears interchange between '35 and '39 for the C22 w. and w/o O/d. The C23 main drive gear (pinion +gear) is the same in both gearboxes. The C24 has a different MDG to the C23, maybe for the fluid drive? Maybe it is longer? In all cases the drive shafts will be different length between w. and w/o o/d. The National Service Data manual (3000+ pages) lists the C23 (optional) and C24 with Warner model AS5-T85A overdrive. Only one prop shaft on C23, two on C24. The case will be either R6 or R7. The C22 has model AS3-T86A o/d which is also R6 or R7. Rear axle ratios were usually different in cars equipped with o/d compared to non-o/d vehicles. The numbers on this one mean it could be from a C23 or C24. http://p15-d24.com/gallery/image/2616-1939-transmission-4/ Edited March 8, 2016 by Spinneyhill (see edit history)
