Phillip Robinson
When I jack the 1929 chevy up, where the u bolts hold the springs on, there is about 2 mm movement in the housing. I can actually move the wheel up. This is where it is tied down on top of the springs. The grease actually pushes out. Is there a problem driving with this movement and how to repair. The manual suggests there is a felt material in this housing. Thanks Phil.
rb6673
NOT OK TO DRIVE.IT IS HARD TO TELL EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING ON FROM YOUR DESCRIPTION BUT YOU NEED TO CHECK: BACKING PLATE,AXLE AND BEARINGS,LEAF SPRING U-BOLTS FOR TIGHTNESS OR BROKEN. Alfre
The axle does move in the bushing and that is why there is a grease fitting.Al

Phillip Robinson
Thanks for the replies. I have pushed in some leather strip to try to take up the movement, rather than lift up the axle and undo the u bolts. There is supposed to be felt in there. Being 86 years old and 155,000 miles, it is probably worn thin. The u bolts are all tight. I have already repaired the axles, but that is not the problem. rb6673
When using reverse be gentle engaging the clutch. They were notorious for snapping an axle in that moment.
Phillip Robinson
Thanks. I have pulled the rear axles off and put new seals in, greased the bearingsand have driven it for about 400 miles. No problems. Just have to remember to reverse slowly.
