… 1937 Dodge Brothers ‘Westchester Coach’ Wood Bodied Station Wagon. I am only the Second Owner of this Special Order Woody. Back In the day Standard equipment had been Canvas Side Curtains with Roll-Up Windows in front Doors only, Because of Up State New York’s brisk morning air Optional Full Side Glass was ordered; that included roll-up windows in all four Doors And Rear Quarter Windows Side Mount Tire with Rear View Mirror’ and Locking Hubcap with key. I will post photo examples soon…

… Dodge Wood Bodied Station Wagons were built on a Commercial Vehicle Chassis that shared the same designed front end sheet metal i.e. Grille etc., as the previous year’s Passenger Car. That is why I have always referred to this Wagon as a 1936 because it better identified the body style. In 1937 Dodge Passenger Cars went to a much different Grille design.

… This Woodie was a Barn Find that came from the Summer Residence of Dr. Von Sopp at ‘Glen Meer Farms’ at the Village Edge of Skaneateles Lake, NY. The name In Old English Script - ‘Glen Meer Farms’ is still visible on both front doors, (see Photo). Back in the 1930s 40s and 50s Wood Bodied Station Wagons were typical fare for the well-to-do especially at their summer residence. Dr. Von Sopp had held onto this Woody with hopes of restoring it. He had showed me photos of other Classic Cars he had owned over the years; but he chose to hang on to this Woody and although he showed me the photo of the Woody when it was new he could not part with it because it included himself with his favorite Dog. I still have his hand written receipt, signed over to me dated Oct 6 1966 it includes the serial number and amount paid. I do have the original 1936 NY Suburban License Plate and the New York State Historical Vehicle Registration and Historical Vehicle License Plates

… Most Automobile Manufactures farmed out their Custom Wood Bodies to the Experts in that field. Chrysler Corp used the ‘Westchester Coach Works’ in Buffalo NY. The ‘Antique Automobile Club of America’ did a large Magazine article some years ago (1960s?) on the ‘Westchester Coach Works & Body Co’. Also in an Issue of the ‘Collectible AUTOMOBILE’ October 2009 the Cover Car is a 1936 Dodge. There is a nice 12 page article on all 1935 – 1938 Dodge Cars and it includes a Factory Photo titled as a Westchester Suburban S/W.

… An old school Cabinet Maker expertly fabricated a few hard to do pieces for me by using the originals as patterns; some representative Photos shown here. The driver’s side wood garnish molding is missing however there is the mirror image available from the passenger Door. Other than that I do not think there is any other major Wood Missing; There are a few simple Roof and Driver Door pieces that need to be fabricated; but all patterns are in place. The Woodie needs mostly refinishing, refitting & reglueing.

… See the Photos of some of the new fabricated wood pieces that are in Golden Oak Framing. The New Mahogany Belt Line Concave Moldings shown were cut from the same board one for each side in Matched Grain Sets, plus the Tail Gate. There is enough New ‘Marine Grade’ ‘Ribbon Stripe Mahogany’ Plywood to redo all panels with a lot left over; (See example photo of the finished right Rear Door). Also included is Photo # 27 which is a 1937 Dodge with Dark Mahogany Panels. With the low mileage 46,151 It was only on the road for 10 years and it still carried the original 1947 NY Suburban License Plate, New York State required a Special Station Wagon License Plate; embossed as a Suburban Vehicle; that License Plate will be included. The Stock Running Boards are in good condition; (see photo of driver’s side floor).

… The Photos of the right rear side including the Rear Door give you an indication of what the finished product will look like. The engine Block has a crack in the top Water Jacket and easy to get at for repair. These Mopar Six Cylinder Engines are quite common and are interchangeable through many years. Although not pictured, but included is a good front Front Bumper, Hubcaps, One locking Hubcap and Side View Mirror for the Side Mount Tire, Radiator, Front and 2^nd Seat and some hardware for the 3^rd Seat a complete Hood. The large piece of New Golden Oak below the Tail Gate is new but yet unfinished.

… Consider its original condition especially at its age of 78 years, I am including good in focus Photos. Please consider that the ‘Photos are Part of the Description’ look them over, your questions are welcomed. Some OF THESE PHOTOS ARE OF THE WOODY 50 YEARS AGO.

… Small price to pay for Wood Bodied Car as not many have survived and they really stand out at Car Shows making them very desirable. Pre War Woodies have been going for way over $100 K at Auction. A compliment to any Collection including your MOPAR Collection and / (pre-war MoPar-abilia). The hard work of Parts allocation has been completed. This Woodie is still in the building shown in the Photos and there are 3 Vehicles in the way of removing it, so it will take some time to get it out.
