rocky5517
my (67) am/fm radio picks up a lot of static. A mechanic friend of mine disconnected the wires from the alternator while the car was running( for a minute) and the static cleared up. What do I need to install to fix this problem?Sam in North Jersey
JZRIV
Hi Sam,There should be a radio noise suppression capacitor mounted to your voltage regulator on the firewall(assuming alternator has not been converted to an internal regulator). I'd probably start by replacing it and go from there.

JZRIV
Try putting a supression capacitor on the alternator output terminal. You could also try putting one on the coil positive terminal. Many older GM cars had both. the capacitiors are available in various configurations at auto parts stores or of course ebay. Search radio noise capacitor or similar.
