rusty12 Posted November 21, 2012 Share Posted November 21, 2012 I am trying to help a friend who just purchased a 1938 Series 40 Canadian coupe (from Victoria, BC). The Canadian registration form lists a VIN/ID number of 844271757. We can not find this number on the car and the DMV in California is telling us they need to know where this number is and see a picture of it on the car. Can anyone suggests where this number might be and/or if this is an actual Canadian Buick ID number or maybe something that was assigned to the car? Or where the VIN/ID number should be? You can try checking the frame for the car serial number, common locations would be stamped on the top of the frame on the left (driver) side either at the very front, under the door sill (won't be able to see with the body on), or near the rear axle. The engine serial number was stamped on both the tag and the engine (on a flat pad in front of the distributor). Back in the day, cars were often titled using the engine serial number, so check the title to see if the engine serial number appears on it somewhere. Canadian law requires that information be kept for all cars built or sold new in Canada. You can try contacting GM of Canada's Vintage Vehicle Services department:Vintage Vehicle ServicesI don't know if they have any information for cars as old as 1938, but maybe you'll get lucky and they will have the car and engine serial number information or know if there is an alternate location where the car serial number was stamped on the frame.
