Fitz,

My information is coming from "The Standard Catalog of Pontiac 2nd edition" by John Gunnell.

1st # = Assembly plant = C = California

2nd symbol = engine type = 8 = in line 8 cylinder

3rd symbol = model year = Z= 1954

4th symbol = type of transmission= H = Hydra-Matic

Remaining symbol = production number for each car line at each assembly plant.

Hope this helps-

Dave.:)

dave is correct, each assembly plant's first car was number 1001, also the H is correct for hydra-matic trans in the 1954 chieftain models, for the 1954 pontiac starchief models the letter A was used to show the starchief was built with a hydra-matic trans. charles coker, 1953 pontiac tech advisor.:)
