Guest roadmaster56
I did a quick scan of old posts but didn't find my answer....maybe someone canhelp:I'm contemplating rebuilding my 48 Chrysler 8 cylinder engine. Will a 1.5 to 2ton "cherry picker" engine hoist safely hoist out the block (less the trans.)Anybody know the approximate weight of just the block with its innards? Also, is there any advantage to removing the engine and tranny as a unit? Mytranny is fine and I was not planning on removing it unless it made there-installation of the engine easier. Are there any tips/tricks I should be aware of re: engine removal/installation?ThanksDavid in Santa Cruz
Guest lawunder
The problem is not the weight, it is the center of gravity is so far back on engine most cherry pickers will not work unless you remove front fenders and bumper, and the C G is why you will want to remove the trans The bell housing clutch an converter are heavy hanging off the back. jazzer3
I recommend pulling the transmission before pulling the engine unless you have the front sheetmetal and grille removed. I pulled the straight 8 from our 48 with only the hood removed and had to stand the engine almost on end to get out and in. The transmission came out first and went in last. c49er
I don't think the trans will sqeeze between the cross member and floor pan. Pull the transmission out first.
