Guest Birdman
I would like to run my motor without the AC compressor attached.I purchased new belts for a non-AC car but they are incorrect (to long).I guess a non-AC car has different brackets.Does anyone know the belt # that is the correct size? This would be the crank/alt/water pump belt on a 65 401.Thanks
Guest pgadler
I have just Your wanted setup: A 65' 401 AC with missing AC-pump. I can check the markings on the belt.Unfortunatly I cannot do it until next week. Perhaps someone else is quicker...

RivNut
Loosen the alternator and adjust it for the shortest belt you'd want to run. Take a piece of twine, narrow rope, tubing, anything that will fit in the pulleys and loop it around the alt. pulley, crank pulley, water pump pulley and measure it. Take those dimensions to your local parts jobber and get a belt to match. When you take the slack out of your alternator, you should have a good fitting belt. You only need to run one belt, not two as when the a/c was installed. A single belt will touch enough of the alt. pulley so there won't be any slippage. Two belts were necessary when you were running the a/c compressor because a single belt did not "grab" enough pulley to prevent slippage.Ed

steelman
If your wife sews, she probabely has a cloth measuring tape about 1/2" wide. Perfect for this job. Loop it around and read the number. Keep the grease off of it though, or there will be trouble...
