These were just some of the most heinous examples of what I could find.
My son loves demolition derbies, so I wind up seeing 3-4 every year. It can be unbelievable what some people will sacrifice to win $500 and a $20 trophy. It is not at all uncommon to STILL see running 1950's and 1960's cars being demo'ed like this, although they never stand a chance against a 1970's GM wagon with a Chrysler drivetrain installed. I once saw (in the smallest, most podunk demo derby I know of) a beautiful 1966 Olds 98 2 door hardtop "run". Rust-free, nice original green paint, the chrome was even nice. Seriously a 325+ point car as it sat! It was junk in 3 minutes. (The geniuses that run these cars forget that they make the most tempting target imaginable to the average demo driver.)
Feel free to rescue as many of these poor souls as you can. There are currently 370 cars listed for sale, 80-90% AACA eligible. Most are parts car caliber, but some sound as if they'd be decent daily drivers with a little work. Several sound like excellant restoration candidates.
Can you believe that there are people out there who'd even consider demo'ing a 1956 Imperial?
frown.gif" border="0
[ 03-23-2002: Message edited by: Dave@Moon ]

Any Moron that would take a 77 Pacer to a demo derby must be suicide prone. When that 56 Imperial comes over the horizon he'll meet his maker in short order.

That 66 Lincoln is just what I have been looking for Dave, if it looks good I just might buy it. Now how the h_ll am I going to get it to Manitoba?! How much would that cost?

Stop and think- the ancient Romans liked to watch gladiator shows in the Colosseum.
And some of us are modern Romans...
A story- when I bought my 1976 Ninety Eight, I went to look at it intending only to put out a lead on it. I get there, and here sits this near gorgeous big Olds with all the docs back to MSO, and a build date of 1st week September- #1808 off the Linden NJ assembly line that year. I figured the old guy was gonna want $3500 or better for it, and having just bought the 74 Hurst, didn't need, want or have anywhere to put another car. He sez "I won't take a dime under $800 for it, and somebody has offered me $600 for it to put it in a demolition derby".
I found somewhere to put another car.
Demolition derbys are low-grade entertainment for low grade people. If I've stepped on toes, get over it. I don't like destruction for destruction's sake mad.gif" border="0 , not that I believe anyone on this DF does, either.

There seems to be "little" difference between people getting together by the thousands to watch people being ripped apart and killed and a few old junk cars being finished off. The things people enjoy watching are a mystery, WWF for one. TO EACH HIS OWN. It is a shame however to see cars that could be classics being wrecked and removed from the"pool" forever! Get out there and buy em up I guess. wink.gif" border="0

Like I said, I've seen numerous demo derbies in the last few years. (I can't wait until my kid outgrows them!)
There is NO way a 1956 Imperial would outlast a Pacer in a demo derby!!!
How you ask? Isn't the metal 5x thicker? Isn't the frame made of railroad ties on the Imperial, while the Pacer essentially doesn't have a frame?
The saddest thing about these postings is that they are sucker sales to demo derby novices! The old iron they think will be an invulnerable battle tank on "the field of play" is actually a brittle, shock sensitive collection of age degraded components. The first serious hit these cars get kills them off instantly. The newer, lighter weight models buckle and give with the blows, and don't shock the drivetrain as serverely.
And given the pervasive less-than-constructive attitude among the other contenders in these "gladiator matches", wearing 1950's or 1960's sheet metal in these events is the equivalent of waving red in front of a bull. If you want to get ganged up on in a demo derby, drive a classic car.
In 1974 I was watching one of the last demo derbies ever braodcast on ABC's Wide World of Sports. This incredible waste was a derby using one of every BRAND NEW car on the U.S. market that year. The drivers were all NASCAR, SCCA and USAC pros.
Think that was a waste? I watched it w/ my uncle. When I said "What a waste!", my uncle told me this story:
He took his son to a local derby in Ohio the previous year. One of the local millionaires decided it would be fun to use one of his immaculate restored antiques in the event. Among all the 10-15 year old Chevys with Chrysler drivetrains there he was....in a 1934 Packard V12!
He was the first car eliminated.
How stupid was that? It was nearly the exact equivalent of using the Lincoln or the 1960 Imperial I posted above.
As I recall a Vista Cruiser won the 1974 event, with a Matador a very suprising second.
[ 03-24-2002: Message edited by: Dave@Moon ]
