Guest d-ancer
Need some help guys. I have a 49 Chrysler and want to change the 6v system to 12v. I am wondering if the solenoid on the trans. and other elect. components will handle the 12v?
c49er
You don't need 12 volt if you are keeping it stock. Stock works well if maintained properly. Bob
34chuck
I have a 1940 Saratoga with the 323 cu. in. eight. It starts every time with a six volt battery. The only reason I can think of to shift to 12 volts is if you want to add an air conditioner.
Rusty_OToole
Yes and no. They may work but not for long. Your car has a lot of electric parts for a car of its age such as, electric wiper, transmission, radio, etc.It is better, cheaper and easier to keep it 6v and just fix whatever is wrong. Guest martylum
Hi-in addition to the solenoid and governor on the fluid drive, you have 2 electrical components on the carb. tied to the fluid drive as well. Why not carry a small 12 volt battery to supply power to radios, etc and leave the basic system as 6 volts. I just finished doing a significant amount of mechanical work on a 49 Chrysler and starting was never a problem once the proper heavy battery cables were used and all the grounds cleaned up.With the power robbing fluid drive, I can't imagine there would be any surplus power left for A/C.Martin Lum

Guest Big_John
Here's what I'm going to use for the solenoids on my 53 Chrysler when it gets converted to 12 volts. Voltage Reducer Regulator 12 VOLTS to 6 VOLTS 20 AMPS - eBay (item 140511141478 end time Feb-20-11 20:57:08 PST)They also have a 15 amp version that is a little cheaper.
