Guest billybird
The 59 AB was used 1946-1948. There will also be a large 59 on the bell housing. The A was mid 1938-1942, with early 38's being 21 studs. The heads were interchangeable for 38-48 and I have seen 59 AB's with A heads someone installed to replicate an earlier look. Also, if you look good there may be a # on the block deck. This will be a 6-8 or more digit #. You will have to clean and look good as these were hand stamped and not very deep. This is the only # that can narrow the production date. Flatheads were not numbered per-se so you will only be able to get within a certain range. Dave Mellor NJ
The 59A type engine actually came out in '45 as Ford scurried to bring out a car to sell the public. Like all manufactureres they spruced up their 42 models. That's the reason for the "5" in 59A. Then they brought out the revamped 8BA engine in the truck in '48,hence the "8".
