Dear Alex:

There's a very simple way to tell what color something is on a Buick engine.

Look at how the item is fastened to the engine. Does the bolt go thru a GASKETED joint? If yes, engine color. If no, black or plated.

Buick invented the funny bolt that has the head in the middle and threads on both ends specifically to enforce their ABSOLUTE rule that the assembly plant isn't allowed to loosen or tighten anything the engine tester has signed off on.

See an early Buick V8 generator adjustment strap for the application of this rule. The bolt goes thru the gasket between the water pump and the block, so it was there WHEN the engine was painted in the engine factory. The strap itself is black, held on by a unpainted lock washer and a bright cad plated nut !!

Note that the very end of the bolt sticking out from the nut is engine color !!

Dave,

Interesting. Ok, makes sense to me. Thanks for explaining it to me like that.

I've been sanding several components down to bare metal and found different colors. So that caused me to be unsure of colors. Obviously someone got "artistic" at some point way back when. :)
