dwollam
There are at least 3 different transmissions in 1927 for the 4 cyl cars, none of which are open drive. The earliest undesignated series is a carry over from 1926, the 2nd series, model 126, has a splined ujoint instead of the older square style, also tranny is set back nearly 1 1/2 inches, then the late, 124 model with the so called "fast four" engine moved the tranny back forward again and continued the splined ujoint with a longer driveshaft again. I have 2 1927 124 roadsters and they both have slightly different trannys as well. The early cars use a multi disc clutch with no front shaft protruding from the tranny and the later ones use a single disc clutch with a more modern, normal front shaft on the tranny. To further add to the confusion, the 1928 model 128/9 "fast four" cars used the same engine as the late 124 model 1927 cars but is a complete new car with shorter wheelbase, open drive, different fenders, etc. Edited November 1, 2010 by dwollam (see edit history)
BYmechanic
Hi Dave, my early 27 Dodge uses the multi disc clutch. The transmission does not have the front protruding shaft.
