Anybody worked over top ledge piece??

Mine has suffered moisture/sun (89)and the

leather has pulled away and cringled up across

the front. Can I use something (like water) to

soften it up and pulled it out and then glue it down???

This is the front big piece that comes down around the radio etc. not the small piece up against the glass.

Jerry,

I don't really know I've not had anything exactly like that. If I were attempting to do that kind of a job the first things I want to know is: Is it hard now, Can you get to the back of the leather.? The only time I soak leather is if I want to ahape it; but when it dries I expect it to be kinda stiff, and when you soak it you really have to soak it not just wet it. Lou

I understand that stiff condition. I ran the problem

across our local dash recreation guru to the answer of

"don't try it". I would be better off cutting out the whole

front piece and gluing in an new solid piece if I can find

some like/similar leather. For the time being I'll just

use a black dash pad. Thanks for the info.

If you're brave, you can try soaking it in a 50/50 mix of liquid Murphys oil soap and water. Wait until leather is soaked, then try to stretch it. You will need to keep working it though. At the same time you will need to remove the degraded foam backing that was glued between the plastic frame and the leather.

Unfortunately, the leather is probably dry-rotted and even though it is wet, the structural integrity of the leather fibers has been compromised and you will likely tear the leather.

Replacing a cut out trim piece with matching

leatherette (?) is the same advise I got from

our local fabric shop. I'll give it a try.

Thanks.
