Have a look in your trunk directly below the trunk release solinoid. You should find a "dime sized" disc, that's the activator end off the solinoid after it fails/ breaks off.

BTW you do know about the orange lever on the trunk lid actuator ? Reach through the passthrough and press down to open. If that does not work the two screws holding the latch or the acuator to the body can be removed and opened that way. You need a loooong extension and (I believe) a 10mm socket.

Could be, or there are several potential sources of ingress;

Rear window seal, sunroof (if so equipped) or/ and rusted out wheel wells.

No sunroof, wheel wells OKAY - we put some groceries in the trunk, went thru car wash and the bags right in the middle of trunk had gotten wet.
