Canadian E-bay Pchse to pickup and bring to USA-Questions

I intend to bid on a set of '52 Special bench seats located near Ottawa and I live west of Clev. Ohio. (550 miles) I am interested in info on border crossing/customs/etc. issues. Seats cost $150. Motor freight delivery $400-600, prohibitive.

1) What issues will I face driving and pickup mdse? Homeland

security, passport, identity, etc.

2) The dimentions of the seats are listed in the Ebay item, number 280163546922, do they look correct for a '53 Special?

Est. weight is 180 lbs., seems high to me.

3) Interested in talking to anyone traving that could pickup seats and come near Clev.

Thanks for any info.

Bert

If your Buick is a driver, the simple solution would be to drive to Ottowa with your passport, replace the seats, & drive home. But since it is so late in the year, I would guess this isn't an option.

If you decide to pick up the seats with another vehicle, you will need your passport & may have to pay fees (like a Canadian sales tax) to transport the goods back over the border when you return. Just make sure the seats have only standard stuffing in them!

I cannot verify 53 Buick seats for you, but even with the high price of fuel, I expect going yourself will be the most cost effective way to do it.

There won't be any Canadian taxes on departure...there may be US duties / taxes / state taxes on your return to the USA, but that may depend on where you cross. You are best off with a passport, but you may still be able to get across both directions with decent photo ID, like a driver's license. I'm not sure on that - I use a passport to be on the safe side.

Oh, fill your tank in the US before you cross the border...it will save you a few dollars...you may think gas prices are high, but cross the border to the socialist north and find out how we are forced to pay for all those social programs.

Hi,

You should not pay any duty, NAFTA took care of that (beside even if no NAFTA the sofa* is made in the US hence no duty). You should pay sales tax however, but then you should do that on things you buy out of state too but not many do. I don't know if the US customs will collect sales tax for your state of residence.

Cheers Dyna

PS: hehe, gas is cheap even in Canada compared to Europe where its close to $8 per gallon (US gallon).

*Unless its a Buick actually/assembled in Canada...

  • 3 weeks later...

Since I made the post, I will update....

1) Drove up and got the seats, nice condition, strapped in the pickup and rode nicely home.

2)Brought the ebay info., and got a bill-of-sale from seller but passed thru customs with little questions and unnecessary to show paperwork.

3) I only had drivers liscense and birth-cert. and my passanger had passport but got no hassles.

4) Liked the advice to fillup gas prior to entry to Canada because it was a long way before I seen a gas station.

5) Used MapQuest and pin-pointed destination allowing quick entry and exit. Made round-trip (1,000 miles) in single day.

All in all, nice trip, good deal and little to be concerned about.

A long drive for one day...glad everything went well for you.

You know you're in Canada very quickly after crossing the border, eh? No more Interstate, that's for sure.
