  1. Great ol V12 ran for about 15 - 20 secs then ran out of gas I had primed it with but sounded great.. went back to start it again and noticed water pumps not turning pulled and found them to be locked up.. Gas also not getting to carb.. will be sending carb and pumps off for rebuild.. Wonder can you bring feloney charges against mechanic for leaving water in a car with new rebuilt engine sitting for ten years? what an ID---.. By the time I finish fixing his mistakes and boo boos I may not be able to afford to finish interior.. GOSH ANT THIS HOBBY GREAT
  2. RolfBu, that was an interesting picture you posted, Do not have expertise posting pic's myself but going too in near future I can see it will be a big big help.. have 2 of the vents you show in my pile of stuff but thought they were for defroster vents..... am I correct or should there be 3 similier vents? shucks, I have not started on interior yet or looked at it closely going back to it today sometime will study it a little closer,, sorry to be a bother, now that I have it started will order more books this evening.
  3. CBoz, THANKS, it was a kick,,,front fenders off, Hood off, NEVER been that close to a V12 nor can I remember seeing or hearing a 12 start or run I can see why people say they run smooth... GREAT SOUNDING ENGINE... WOW GOOD LUCK
  4. Making notes! figure it will be about a year in progess so for right now go with NAPA. still have phase 2 to go; fenders - hood to put on plus all chrome as well as top and all interior.. nothing ever easy is it
  5. Thanks RolfBu Your right in that battery was on the cheap, but also only 6 volt the advance auto store had in stock in a hurry I took it... should have waited. actually to small. will try NAPA for a High Ford or Group 2
  6. today got engine started first time!!!!! WOW! actually started 3 times by priming, First and second time just immediatly quit.. third time ran about 15 seconds then battery to tired to go again..V 12 cetainly has a different sound. Engine just had enough time to smooth out before it died.. SO SMOOTH, I am on right track.. Engine that sit at least ten years not froze up. tough old flat heads ant they.. with any luck another LZ Connie will hit the road. Have put about three gallons gas in tank. Will start a few more times priming then check for gas from fuel pump at carb..Read here where the v12 turns over slow that amazed me also, it started while turning so slowly... it was like the old 50 flat head I had (first car) starting just before the battery quit.. but the engine sounds so different turning over and running..
  7. WOW! ROLF nice setup.. Been in Soutern Calif Valley in summer if it works there it works anywhere.. not seen or heard of south wind gas heater but suppose I will in future as I get into project. Want to stay as close to orig as I am able. but might Have to go for air.
  8. Been looking back through old topics cannot find something I remember seeing just a short time ago.. What type/brand and number battery fits 40 Continental. bought one in a hurry off the shelf farm/truck type but it does not seem to have power to last very long or have much punch.
  9. that answers question .. still trying to start 40 LZ before I work on interior.. I have not seen any reference to air conditioning ? Me thinks South Carolina ME 40LZ will be Spring Fall car...
  10. Seen references to hot water heaters in 40s - 41s. Mine has hot water heater with I think ARVIN on front is this factory or aftermaket. Are these acceptable if restoreing to original condition? If arvin aftermarket are hookups avaiable from normal suppliers (am going to need fan, water outlet connectors from engine as well as most under dash except unit itself).
  11. being new here I see has its advantages,, I'm not going to get all worked up about it but like the man says $8 vs engine rebuild... As a new to linc 12 I myself have been wondering about such small things as lead additive.. Question is oil additive recommened zddp avaiable NAPA, Advance stores? I used suggest 30 - 40 weight on oil change as suggested to me on forum.. But it seems to me any extra protection is worth considering..given value and scarce parts
  12. rolfbu, thanks, realy beautiful 41 compared to the side pipe sled looks like beauty and the beast
  13. I was 16 - 17 early 60s and shopped for car parts at a Pete's auto salvage.. I made the mistake of pokeing fun at a 51 Hudson Hornet.. Pete and his partner CHEWED me out and almost threw me off the property.. seems some people liked the bath tub style but more importent they let me know the old Hudsons had a great dependable engine.. Pete later tried to get me to take home for $15.00 (going price then for salvage cars) a 1927 Buick a man had driven from a barn to the salvage yard. It was actually in good shape My father would not let me put the car in the yard.. Pete's only choice was to crush it for salvage. I guess that one loss sparked my intrest in old cars
  14. Zephyr, no doubt a little thing to you "old timers" but got distributor on and hooked up today (sunday). wife gave me the day off. have to hook up vacumm advance line then I can roll engine a few times heads off then go for startup... (if things go well). Wanted distributor on before rolling becase I wasn't sure being off would damage anything.. on close inspection spark wires not new but all checked ok.. will have to replace sometime soon. Now have some experience and from what I can tell taking wole asembley off may be the way to go. The best way seems wire distributor install and thread back through conduit.
  15. Thanks for the offer on the wire. but if 7mm solid core can work I'll make anothe trip to auto supply.. they owe me two h10 plugs anyway bought battery and plugs this morning, Guess I has being optimistic till I started trying to assemble plug wires.. ALL GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME... I can hear one of you old v12, people saying be patient it ant as easy as you thunk RIGHT!
  16. had time to intstall a couple wires but in attempting another wire the first two slipped back out. jake had warned this was a problem area.. guess because I never delt with this setup (tube routing) did not think it would be problem.. May have checked wrong side for #10 will recheck on monday have all day and can be more relaxed.. wires appear newer may have cracked from sitting 10 years or have bad end connection. your right about all NOW do not want to do this again soon
  17. got distributor on this morning, had to quit for home projects. wow, bigger job then I thought, per jake, put distributor on aligning turn key. first, second, third attempt did not seat all way to block, turned key 180 seated no problem tightened bolts with finger then snuged.. wires another problem, appears you have to disassemble wire route tubes to get enough slack or am I just being impatient. #10 wire did not show continuity on meter test. is this a special wire or can it be made up from make your own avaiable spark plug wire. guess I'm being a worry wart but is ther a test to assure timing not out 180 before starting...
  18. rick, what the world reay needs,,, another smart alec, ha ha
  19. got 66%. FAILED, a real test, first one I have failed in many many years... guess I ain't so smert afterall
  20. peecher okzephyr rolfbu rickomo1, thanks coated my long sitting cylinders down with mystery oil let sit and then rolled by hand. was stiff at first then rolled... changed oil then recoated cyl walls and valves through stems will now sit overnight. had to call mr jake about distributor hookup and got some great info and tips. will stop in am at auto store get 6 volt battery and champion h10 plugs. will roll engine heads off then put on heads and go for start by monday or tues. I'm sure I will be talking to earl soon and get another book or two. I have engine repair manual and mountain of service bulletins and parts catalog. Tried to do my homework but do not expect this will be the last quetion that will come up. but mabe I can learn as I go.
  21. been looking through service parts catalogue and boos herrel catalogue have not been able to locate spark plug gap settings as well as type lube used for water pumps. am assuming mechanic that installed plugs installed correct ones, but just in case what type is correct? guess I need another book. have a mountain of paper printed now from gear head service disc and books a few more should about do it (suggestion on best) distributor back yesterday from Mr. Jake, GREAT JOB, LOOKS LIKE NEW
  22. USED BEST CONCRETE COATING FROM HOME DEPOT ON NEW WAREHOUSE FLOOR BEFORE ANY TRAFFIC, WAREHOUSE NOW OCCUPIED BY HEAVY MACHINE SHOP SUPPLIER (OIL SPILLS, FORK TRUCK, ECT.) RECOATED AFTER GOOD PRESSURE WASHER CLEANING AFTER ONE YEAR, SOME STAINS AND TIRE MARKS WOULD NOT COME OUT BUT ALL IN ALL NOT BAD NOW GOING ON 3 YEARS OLD. DOES NOT LEAVE THAT HIGH SHINE BUT I SUPPOSE UNDER RESIDENTIAL TRAFFIC WOULD BE GOOD BALANCE BETWEEN COST AND FLOOR PROTECTION. ALSO WAS WARNED FROM CONCRETE MAN ABOUT THICK COATINGS THAT MADE FLOOR ULTRA SLICK WHEN DAMP OR WET.. WILL SOON REPLACE GARAGE AT HOME, GOING WITH SAME PRODUCT. BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION
  23. Excellent point about checking water pumps. did not think about that one.. will do.. V12, have a water flow heater not hooked up. appears that one of two mechanics was working on installing wipers and putting in heater when he quit becase head leaked, owner got off on other projects. figured I would start engine without water if ok then get a hose for water outlet on head and crimp off restart and run a while. In short just a time saver.. if that doesnt make sense to you I'm open to suggestions.. I realy at this point ready to check and make sure no major problem from sitting.. If I thow something I do not want to clean up the water..
  24. just thought I'd check, Engine was rebuilt and started - car then sit inside warehouse approx 10 years 1 alum head off it had leaked on startup. obtained cast heads removed head still on car (real bad pitted underside) cleaned block head seat and studs vacuum cleaned any trash from cyl valves. Slightly moved pistons to insure not frozen (ok), will oil cylinder walls and valves marvel oil, before rolling with starter will also oil water pumps drain any oil in engine and replace. then install heads plugs and start (after prayer) without coolent, let run a few then add coolent for check.... ok plan?? have I forgot anything ? suggestions??
