  1. I completely rebuilt my 29 Buick gas tank with galvanized using only the original ends / filler pipe. On my Cord, I had Gas Tank RENU do it about 10 years ago and it's still holding. I would think that boiling it out at a rad shop would clean out all the rust but then you'd need cut open it somewhere to reattach the baffle and seal it. FYI. Bill McL

  2. I was given these 2 McL-Buick badges (circa early-mid 30's radiator badge or tail-light emblem) at Hershey this year and was surprised to see what I'd call a reverse image of the normal McLaughlin Buick logo, which I've always seen as white Buick on a blue background, like the one on the left. (Both have the same raised button attachment piece on the back.)

Anyone else seen a Buick one like the one on the right and, if so, when was it used?

  3. Sid: Nothing will interchange between a Master and Standard differential. That does not mean it cannot be done - just means it's complicated (read - expensive).

Joe Krepps made (may still have some left) new gears at something like 3.55 to 1 which would be the easiest way to go, I think.

You can park 1 car there and vend. You also have access to 2 portable toilets.

I am leaving for Hershey at 4 AM tomorrow and going to bed now.

If you are interested you can email me at <bill@29buick.ca> or call my cell after 8 AM tomorrow morning (416-580-5802).

More on the UK 28 Royal Tour car, model 496, with less than 40 K miles.

First, though, in Antique Automobile Quarterly (Fourth Quarter 1974 - Vol. XII, No. 4 - Pg. 12 & 13) there is a photo of the Prince arriving at City Hall in Toronto on Aug. 6/27 and there are 4 open cars clearly shown. This neg. is on file with the Public Archives in Ottawa (No. C-67205). I have scanned 1/2 the photo showing the cars and will try to attach it to this post.

The UK car (3 pics, hopefully attached) is serial # 140099 and engine # 2080521. This car was converted (by the factory, I believe) to RHD and sold to South Africa. The car came into the UK in 1933 and was registered to Mr. Alfred Holtby c/o the Standard Bank of South Africa, London. Sold to Mr. Visick of Midhurst Engineering in Sussex. Car was fitted with a recovery crane and used as a recovery vehicle for the next 20 odd years. Purchased by Cyril Piggott in 1959 who removed the crane and put back a rear seat. The current owner did odd jobs on the car and expressed an interest in owning it. He bought it in 1992 and restored it (he also owns another 28 and two 27 Buicks). During the restoration, he found the original cream & turquoise colours and some of the original interior which had been panelled over.

I will let the current owner know of this site / post and he may want to add information on his car.

  6. There is a special Trippe light wrench to remove this serrated bolt (it's not a nut). It is an approx. 3/8" rod, about 5 inches long, and bends 90 degrees and has a female serrated end to mate with the bolt.

The bolt was in the underside of the bracket and was used, I believe, so that the lights could not be stolen using a normal wrench.

Would be happy to take a photo of it and post (if someone can tell me how to post a photo) or send it to you. Send me an email: <bill@29buick.ca>.

  7. Steve:

I use Optima batteries in both my 29 Buick roadster and my 37 Cord Westchester - neither of which are show cars, so I don't worry that they are not correct for judging.

In the Buick, I simply wedged the battery in the battery box with styrafoam - and I'm not worried that it will bounce out as it's a heavy battery.

In the Cord, I already had 2 battery mounting rods and a metal battery top hold down piece for the old, standard sized battery in place in the battery box and I simply modifiied the metal battery top hold down piece to make it smaller so it fit the optima battery.

I suppose one other option would be to put 2 optima batteries in the battery box, hook-up in series and probably a standard sized battery top hold down piece would fit onto mounting rods inserted into the battery box.
