  1. wow...

OK, yes, there are narrow strips of felt in there, glued to the socket parts of the ball holders. When set right they hold the ball where you put it without binding.

I don't have any advice on loosening up tight ones... don't make it too loose or you will regret it.

It is an easy fix once you remove the dash. This will also be an opportunity detail the dash, the instrument bezels....everything...

  2. I agree with Jason's comment, "Are you sure you want to do a frame off?". If this is a car that you want to drive and enjoy but have it super clean under the hood, just pull off the front clip down to the frame and detail what you can see.

  3. I'm a great example of potential.....that is, I potentially may never finish my car.

Best way is to take your time and stay organized. #1 Rule, get it running right and stopping right. That way you can move it. Throw nothing away until the project is done. Tag all parts. Your memory is not what it used to be and it only gets worse. Take pics before you take the car apart. Be patient. You will get depressed wondering if you'll ever get it done. Have a budget and a time frame to complete the car. Then triple it to be safe. Other than those pointers, have a good time.

  4. Carl, glad to hear that the gas tank worked out well for you. I spent a few minutes washing the car and trying to get the white walls white. I'm committed to doing a little every week. Taking stock of what I'm missing and making a list of stuff I need. I have more parts than I know what to do with...mostly need soft trim that has been misplaced over the years.

Still need to detail the motor again. The painter painted the underside of the hood. So, I need to fix that and make the motor look pretty again.

    One step at a time.

  5. Finally pulled the car from storage in San Diego yesterday and transported it to Phoenix last night. Going to unload and wash the car today and determine the next steps. Will update with progress.

It's getting cold here (down into the 40s!). So, I may need to wait for the weather to warm up before I get too far into it.

  6. I'm thinking that the referenced vinly top was not a factory vinyl top. I can't say for sure but I think that vinyl topped cars did not have the fake vent panel under the rear window and the moldings for the top were a complete setup - at least the ones were that I pulled from a junker a decade or two ago. This one looks like it has the same sail panel trim that a non-vinyl top car has and a home made piece was added along the bottom of where the top would end. A picture of the trim tag would answer those questions.

    Ed

This is not a vinyl top car. The vinyl top trim includes corner pieces on each side which connects to the sail panel trim and a long strip the goes across the back.

  7. (sigh) still zero progress. Thinking about selling the car and putting it all behind me...I just don't have the time. It is stored 15 min from my office and I haven't seen it in months....the only time I see it is when you bump it to the top and I respond...I like looking at the pics, but I can't get further than that.

  8. You could also do the blue cloth or black cloth with silver headliner...or how about white vinyl with white headliner...color change is easy...I did it and the color codes can be mixed at any quality paint store. I never warmed up to the green vinyl; however, the green cloth is beautiful especially with Verde or seafoam green exteriors...white over black IMO is boring. You could also do silver exterioir over white.....there a just so many cool options.....talk to dick Sweeney about his interesting bamboo cream over green vinyl with black vinyl top...it is certainly interesting to see.

  9. I added a top to my car. Love the look. Get one of the tops made from NOS material. Theyre more expensive, but they look great...when my top was being installed there was another car adding a top made from lesser quality fabric. The upholstery guy told me that after the owner of the other car saw my top, he hated his. Don't start the project until u find the mouldings.

  10. Thought I'd chime in and offer and my thought. If it has an LX block, posi, aluminum valve covers, GS ornamentation in all the right spots, BS code, distributor (tag may or may not be around), dual quad set-up (carbs and air cleaner), correct springs and right size exhaust, then it has the GS package and nobody can dispute that.

These cars are old enough that engines could have been changed, but if it was replaced with another LX code block, that's what's important.

I think too many guys get caught up in the numbers matching thing. What's more important to me is that the package is complete, that the car has a solid body, and is complete as possible.

If the car has the LX block, the BS code tranny, and the glove box emblem (these items are hard to find) the car probably came from the factory that way...and even it it was added later and done correctly, then I still say it's a GS. How could it not be?

This sounds like the real deal and it runs. All else being okay, I say jump on it and get busy. That car needs alot of work to get right and it'll be tougher than doing a Chevy just because parts are harder to get.

....and by the way, send me the VIN so I can register the car.

  11. The original Protecto Plate will most certainly indicate whether or not your friend`s car is a GS. The trans code, BS, is exclusive to the GS model and is displayed on the P-O-P. The `65 P-O-P also displays some other option information. Post a pic ;)

    Tom Mooney

Tom, that is a good piece of info that I didnt know. Ive never had a car with a POP.

  12. There's no way to tell from the photos if this is a GS. You need to check for the LX code block, BS code transmission, posi-traction, GS badges on the fenders, rear deck and glove box. There's other stuff like the distributor and its ID tag and shorter springs but those things could either be missing, replaced and hard too identify, but if you have the other stuff, I'd say you have a GS.

By the way, do you have a VIN for this car? I can add it to the registry.

  13. Looking to get floor mats for my '63, which has the standard blue vinyl interior. Ebay doesn't seem to yield much in the way of results, and I saw the reference to Legendary Auto Interiors, but I think I'd prefer something to match the blue.

Have found three possible sources, and I'm wondering if any of you have any experience with these (or have another suggestion). Thanks in advance...

    Buick Riviera Floor Mats, Set of 2 - 1963, 1964, 1965

I read through the Legendary catalog. They offer the original style in blue and it seem that you can even order a custom color. Another option would be to find a set of the rare carpet insert accessory used in place of the floor mats. They are a plastic mat with chrome ribs going through them. I have a set for my car and they're pretty cool if only for their novelty.

  14. HI Patrick

Im also in need of the air cleaner decal

    mine is a 1964 wildcat 401 nailhead 4dr. hardtop

are all the decal's the same ? (other than the engine size)..

as soon as you answer ill pay either way(paypal or mail).

    thanks so much

    John

John, it was good talking with you yesterday, as I mentioned the decal you need is available from Cars, Inc in NJ, (oldbuickparts.com) and I think their's are made from aluminum too.

  15. I had some of these decals made up a few years ago because all of the other repros were poor subsititues for the original. I have several left for $25 ea + 3.50 shipping for folks who need one.

These are exact replicas of the original made from anodized die-cut aluminum. They're perfect and even have the polished gold edge just like from the factory. Throw away that faded, bent original or paper copy. Get the best reporduction ever while you can for your dual quad '64 - '66 Riviera, Wildcat, or Electra.

Satisfaction guaranteed or your money returned.

  16. is the 1965 grill a direct fit on the 63/64?

No, it's not a direct fit. The best way to do the conversion is to use a '65 front clip; however, that requires inner fenders, fenders, clamshell assemblies, headlight arms, headlight motor with bracket, wiring harness, various relays, grill, upper and lower bumpers (No, '63/'64 bumpers will not work with a '65), and splash pan. It's a bolt-on and the parts should be readily available for those inclined to tackle this task. I think it's easier just to buy a '65, no?
