  1. 14517325 = frame serial number
    1 = built at Flint, MI
    4517325 = sequential number, range for 1946 was 4,364,445 to 4,524,130

    Buick was known to use an I for a 1 and a b for a 6.  Perhaps it is a 1946 but wasn't imported until 1949?  It wasn't unusual for the importing country to use the year of import as the year of the car.  If you find the body plate mentioned above it will have the model year listed on it.  The plate will look like the one in the attached photo. As you can see from the photo,  in 1946 the serial number plate was attached with screws, so it would be easy to swap with another.

  2. 1430882x = car serial number (the number you posted is short one digit)
    1 = built at Flint, MI
    430882x = sequential number, range for 1942 was 4,257,442 to 4,364,444 (this portion should be 7 digits long)

    45101395 = engine serial number
    4510139 = sequential number, range for 1942 was 4,457,941 to 4,556,599
    5 = Series 5/Super (1942 was the first year for the series digit to be at the end of the engine number.  Yes, I know, Buick pulled a fast one.)

    So looks like 1942 numbers to me.  I've posted some pictures of the engine numbers from  two 1942 Specials showing the series digit at the end of the engine number.

  3. Yes, it's an engine serial number, which was used as the VIN by many states back in the day.  Looks like a previous owner didn't know it was the engine serial number and stamped it on a tag.  Not the first time I've seen someone do that because they were unaware it was the engine serial number.  Also possible that they swapped engines and discovered that the old engine serial number was used as the VIN only after they made the swap and then made a tag to match the title.  It would be good to check the engine serial number of the engine currently in the car.

  12. The frame number is correct for 1937.  Buick didn't start using a numerical plant code at the beginning of the frame number until 1938.  In 1937, Flint didn't use a plant code, C was used for South Gate, CA and L for Linden, NJ.  In 1938 it was 1 for Flint, 2 for South Gate, and 3 for Linden.

    3191909 = frame serial number, correct for a Flint built car
    range was 2,999,497 to 3,219,847 for 1937 so C4560698 would not be a valid Buick frame serial number for 1937

  14. What it tells you depends on what side of the engine it is from.  Since it is 9 digits long, I'm guessing it is from the driver side of the engine, which makes it the car/engine serial number. This number decodes as follows:

    4G4006709
    4= Series 4400/LeSabre
    G = 1960 model year
    4 = built at Kansas City, KS
    006709 = sequential number, range for KC was 001001 to 032090

    You said you were working on an Invicta, if this was the original numbers matching engine then the engine serial number should start with a 6 and match the serial number plate in the driver door jamb. This engine is from a LeSabre, so you will need to find the engine production code.  The engine production code will be found in the same location on the passenger side and it is usually less than 9 digits long.  Bill listed two of the engine production codes used in 1960, the complete list is:

    L3G = low comp. 364 V8
    3G = 364 V8
    4G - 401 V8

    The format AB123 didn't start until the 1963 model year, so in 1960 the numbers following the engine production code are a sequential number, which can be upto 6 digits long since 1960 Buick production was 253,999.  My guess is the engine production code will start with 3G, making it a 364 nailhead V8.

  15. I've attached to pictures, one is from the 1963 Buick assembly manual and the other is a Dealer Service Information letter (see last paragraph).  Both mention the three digit number. The highest number I've seen on an engine is 757.  I've seen one POP with 770 and this post references one that is 778:
