  1. Bill, I know why you are in Florida. Albrightsville really gets hammered in the Winter compared to here in Downtown Jim Thorpe. The storm today is expected to dump between 8 and 14 inches.

I would be somewhere further south but as of now It would look like a circus train moving my "stuff"

  2. Stooy, here are some photos of a project that has been on hold for almost ten years. I have plans for a 265 C.I. six for a 48 Windsor. I made the nine flanges for the six-cylinder and got some 1 3/4" stainless-steel tubing and plan on making a homemade intake and exhaust. Since this project I have gained an interest in the straight eight and would like to install one into another 48 Windsor coupe (poor condition, rat-rod material) that we have.

It took me approximately nine hours to make the nine flanges for the six, the eight cylinder will take 12 flanges. I would like to take patterns and see if a metal shop could cut them out of plate for a reasonable cost.

I made the flanges shown out of 1/2" hot-rolled flat bar and using a 1 3/4" hole saw the tubing fits nicely into the flange. I will hold the tubing about 1/4" shy of the engine surface of the flange and put a fillet-weld on the inside where it will not be seen. With the 1/2" flange and this small weld the flanges should not warp.

As can be seen the actual arrangement for any of the tubing has not been decided, i will fabricate with the engine sitting in position. After reading about intake manifolds I will also make some provision for heating the intake manifold, maybe silver-soldering some copper tubing to the stainless.post-39071-143142388277_thumb.jpg

  3. Bill, I can't give you specifics on the 56 Chevy but I can tell you from experience. On older cars with worn window channels or "cats-whiskers" windows can crack with a close of the door. I have had a few older cars with worn channels and on two occasions have cracked driver's side door windows by just closing the door with a little too-much force and I am usually gentle in closing a car's doors.

If the windows rattle they are subject to cracking by closing the doors.

  4. Hello, I recently bought what was advertised and appears as such, a NOS carburetor(Stromberg AAVS-2). There are no marks on the base of the carb indicating anything was ever tightened against it.

I was thinking about introducing some "neets foot oil" to the accelerator pump and installing it on a car as is. I do, usually, add a cocktail of additives (ethanol stuff and a stabilizer) to the fuel tank .

Do you think I will get away with using the carburetor as is or should I rebuild it using a kit with ethanol proof parts?

The new carburetor cost me the same, $100.00, as the older Stromberg shown, I was as happy as if I hit the lottery!

    Thanks,

    Jay

  5. Thank you Marrs for the information. I was checking on availability Of "#127 Octane" and will probably eventually find it on Amazon books or similar website. I did find it available from a site that may be from Malaysia "mybooks.my" and I think the price was reasonable, I had to convert RM 25.7 to US dollars which is about $8.00 US which is OK with me but they did not accept or recognize my shipping address.

I'll find it eventually and again thank you for the info.

  6. Now you got me wondering if any of my cars will will engage while running?

    Bob,

One or two of our cars, when first started you have to goose the engine sometimes to get the charging system charging. The starter would only engage if I failed to make sure the amp gauge wasn't showing a positive charge. I attribute it to lack of use, when the time comes that goosing it a little doesn't get it charging I'll have to fix it.

So if the amp gauge is showing a discharge don't be showing off how superior those Chrysler cars are, or were.

  7. "What is the function of the wire coming from the A post of the generator to the solenoid?"

That part of the solenoid wiring circuit prevents the starter solenoid from being energized once the engine is running . With out the engine running and the generator "Arm" terminal not producing voltage the armature wiring circuit provides the ground side circuit for the solenoid relay coil.

Once the engine starts and is running the "ARM" circuit is producing voltage which opposes voltage from the starter switch. Therefore the starter solenoid cannot operate while the engine is running.

I was waiting for that, I knew it but couldn't remember.

One time I was going to demonstrate how the starter wouldn't engage while the car was running.

At an idle, whether the generator wasn't genning enough or the regulator was sticking the stater did engage.

I was bewildered because I had done it before without the starter engaging and it was a while before I realized why it hadn't worked and another while before I would try it again.

  8. Dave, I usually grease these bearings pumping slowly until I just see grease appearing between the seal lip and axle. I think the manual calls for a given amount, I never figured out how many grease-gun pumps equal an ounce, but too much grease will likely get on the brake shoes.

Also, my manual is a little mixed up concerning drain plugs for the differential, both C-39 rears I've worked on had a small plug at 6 o,clock for draining.

  9. Brian,

My car lead a tough life, the chrome is pre-Korean War chrome, it shines but is pitted badly. We used old jeans and chrome polish and it shines like new it just has all these little pits in it.

One night under the lights the grille was as shiny as ever and a young lad asked me if I had put "glitter" in the chrome. We cut our knuckles when the jeans wore through, pieces of the grille could be used for a wood rasp.

But, I have put over 8,000 miles on it since it's return to the road in the spring of '08 and I am just happy that I got it before it ended up crushed or with an overhead in it.

The Hemi lost the long bellhousing in 54 becoming more hotrod friendly.

  10. Bob, before it gets loaded onto any ships give me a call!

    Jay

Bob, please pardon me I should have included, "Please" and "Thank You" in my post.

I could park your 3-window between our 48 New Yorker, two door sedan, and our 3-window Concord and I could probably hook a trailer to the New Yorker and pull that Imperial 3-window cpe. that you are building all back here to Pennsyltucky.

    Spring is on the way,

  11. I had a similar problem with our 48 Chrysler, I changed the condenser and solved the problem. Your fuel line looks to be about the stock location, it is hard to find an original line that hasn't been cut for a filter. I had to make a fuel line for one of our cars, it comes out of the carburetor pointing front and makes an immediate right turn to get away from the exhaust manifold. This car usually will fire up easily after a hot shutdownpost-39071-143142331458_thumb.jpg

  12. Adrian, The motor I got from Old Foundry Toy Works is, I believe, the same as Monster Scooter Parts motor number MY1020 it is 4 1/4" Diameter and is 24 volts. As supplied from Monster Scooter Parts the motor will have a sprocket, Old Foundry sourced a gear from somewhere I don't know but what they did was to turn the motor shaft down to Approx. 1/4" and the shaft sheared in short order.

The 4 1/4" diameter motor put the drive gear in fairly good mesh with the driven gear but I did use some shim stock between the motor and mount until I was happy with it. You can't get rid of the gear whine as they are straight cut gears.

The gear that was installed on the motor had metric dimensions which might narrow your search for a gear. I think there are normally only two different pitches for gears that are in inch measurements so metric gears may also only have a few different pitches. I don't recall the exact measurements of the drive gear but am fairly sure it has 12 teeth.

If my weld job on the original motor didn't work I was going to get another motor and a sprocket from Monster Scooter Parts and try to fit a sprocket inside the original drive case and use chain drive.

  13. Adrian, I am curious as to how our cars compare in some of the build details. What is the serial number on your car, the number on our car is stamped on the frame and inside the body in the seat area. Do you know when they were built? The manufacturers name on the tires has been ground off of the tires.

    Can you post some photos?

For those reading along I have been corresponding to Adrian about powering the car.

  14. I had luck pulling a tube out with this tool. I believe someone posted that if the head is removed you may be able to go through some of the head bolt holes in the block and help the tube along with a slim punch or something of the sort.

The tube shown is structurally in good shape but was kinked when installing it because there was so much corrosion between the rear cylinder and the block the tube couldn't fit. Whoever drove the tube in kinked it.

After removing this distribution tube all freeze out plugs were removed and I used long pieces of steel rods and flat bar to scrape out the corrosion, the new tube slid right in.

A trick I just learned and used on a 36 straight 8 that I just assembled is removing all manifold studs and in my case head studs and running lengths of cable powered by a drill motor through all coolant passages, you would be amazed at where the end of the cable ends up sometimes and the piles of rust removed.

    Good luck,

    Jay

  15. Hello out there, so far there are over 4000 views on the Baby Bugatti and before someone notices that I spent some time trying to eliminate gear noise on straight cut gears.

A few months ago while lying in bed reflecting I realized thet the car has straight cut gears and eliminating gear noise isn't happening.

The car is ready for another season, I still haven't decided on what to do about the 24 volts feeding the ignition on light but that is something I have to do when the spirit moves me.
