  1. Whatever is worth collecting from the 1990s era in another 15-20 years will no doubt see aftermarket manufacturers making computers and other electrical components just as we see horn button, sunvisors, replaceement carbs and the rest for our old cars.

And as for mileage my 300HP El Dorado Touring Coupe cranked off 29.8 MPG cruisin at 75 MPH for about 175 miles and a grand total of 26.7 for 285 remaining miles at 80 MPH. The last 100 miles was without cruise control. Hybrid my butt! When gas is gone it's gone and humanity will move on as it always has.

  2. And for those that are not interested in a national organization judging there were myriad aftermarket parts and accessories available that were legitimately used during the era of the car. Honest Charlie, J.C. Whitney and many other smaller outfits sold everything from multi-carb intake manifolds to custom radio knobs- just like today.

As a side note my uncle worked for a dealership aftre he got home from the war and told me how the dealers loaded every conceivable factory accessory part onto the cars in 1946-48 in an attempt to boost profits which the war took away.

  3. I got one at NAPA for my 50. The glass housing looks like a duplicate to me. anyhow its # 3034. If you have them find one you can see if it'll fit the housing. Make sure there's a gasket with the ppaer filter too.

  4. Mr. Pushbutton, nice to know. I have an Autolight alleged equivelent in now but figure the AC 45s are exactly the right heat range and all for it.

Just curious, but has anyone gone into a regular auto parts store and asked for vintage plug designations just to hear the answer?

  5. There are cars that are mostly original in all senses but perhaps the previous owner painted it simply for weather resistance and rechromed the worst deteriorated parts and left others original plus replaced nonfunctioning ancient wires. There is no class, I guess, for these bastards.huh.gif

  6. Interesting story. I've come across quite a few folks with engine numbers only on their titles. The post war Packards such as my 50 had a body ID plate held on with screws so they disappeared easily leaving later owners with engine numbers on titles. Then if they ever need to replace the engine I wonder what problems will cause.

  7. I know it's a bit much to ask for every geographic area of shops but I patronize one that does a regular amount of vintage car work. I know when I go there they've seen every type of radiator, gas tank and A/C there is unlike the quick and dirty places that probably only see stuff from 1990 on.Fedora.gif

  8. I am consistently the only Packard at any event I attend cruise-in or show. Of course that is rarely acknowledged by those officiating. And here in So. Cal. I expected more. There is a ratty 51 that has been around very occassionally. I saw a 55 4-door last year and that is it. Well there was that supercharged Packabaker that was the illigitamate offspring of the Golden Hawk and a Clipper at the one last night, but that's it. It is good to be unique in comparison to the flood of Fords and Chevrolets. 40/50s Dodges or Plymouths are pretty rare too.

  9. What ever anyone wishes to call it back then it was a going machine as you mentioned. The Hawks were performance cars and the 58 no different. People that hated the weirdness or stodgyness of Studebakers did like the Hawks. It's like a Corvette in the Chevy line of bla cars today.

  10. Redhededrebel- as pointed out, you may have $30,000 in a certain car but, of course, that doeesn't mean it has a value to anypone else of 30K! There are many, many instances of fools attempting to sell cars that they got in over their heads on. You know the ads "90% complete. Have $32,000 in receipts so far." Yeah the value of the clunker is $25,000 for a #1 condition car so he figures you're lame enough to buy into his stupidity and pay more than the car is worth.

By the same token if the guy who spends $10,000 more than a car is worth is refurbishing it does so because he loves the car and plans to keep it forever that's his busness and more power to him.

Surface rust is one thing as is peeling chrome and many rusted through sections are another story. A couple rust holes in a floor is fixable but add trunk, rocker and door rust through coupled with holed frame rails and well.... you get the idea.
