Randall, no don't use the same grease as your chassis! For internal mechanisims, [color:"red"]<span style="font-weight: bold">always </span> (being a former Cadillac mechanic, I know) use white lithium grease. The chassis grease will eventually harden and dry up. Then you are worse off then you are now. Some will destroy plastics too. This is a common mistake made by many. Lithium grease is designed for this use.

That line is from a Bugs Bunny toon with the big furry creature. I do that to my sister all the time.

Actually the Amphicar was inspired by a smart assed comment in 1932. Hans Trippel was building his own race cars and they were very forward looking autos, Streamlined bodies. The story is that some other race driver commented "It looks like a fish, can it swim too?" Well, this sparked Hans on a 70+ year long passion. Hans took that car and added a shaft through a stuffing box out the back, sealed up the body and had a friend lower it onto the water. It floated! Over the next 70 years (Hand died in 6/2001) he made many successful amphibians. During WWII he was "volunteered" by Adolph to create an amphibious vehicle (called the SG6 and he designed the Schwimmwagen) for the Germans. Hans ended up doing time after the war, but continued to design and build them. Remember the gull wing doors of the Mercedes? Yes, Hans designed and patented them. He sold that patent for 5,000 DM to help fund a little company with Borgward in Berlin called "Amphicar"

  4. OK, it's obvious I like the things that are not considered "normal". Being in Engineering, I love the gadget type cars. The ones that may not be pretty or "cool" but have that certain something that sets them apart. This is not just because they are beautiful, this is because they are unique in some innovative way.

    [color:"red"] <span style="font-weight: bold">What is your personal favorite innovative auto and why?</span>

Mine is by far the Amphicar (DUH!), but my 2nd is the Ford Skyliner (not Sunliner) with it's retractable hard top. The Airflow is another car way ahead of it's time.

  5. CJ - As I remember, it was along the hiway on the way to "Puddle Valley" where we were doing our survey work. It was a red/white car sitting about 200' off the road. Ya think after 20 years it would still be there? They guy was pretty old then, I would guess he's long gone by now. I am sure the area is built up by now anyway. Just a guess.

  6. A long time ago (1980-ish) I was doing some survey work in Toele, Ut. There was a '57 Skyliner sitting with the top partially retracted. I stopped by to inquire about it and about got shot. He immediately got really pissed off and went into a diatribe about Ford and the POS car it was etc ... etc. In the end after he calmed down he told me of how it got stuck a lot and decided it would sit there until "he rotted away before it would be sold". As I remember it showed in the 5k range on the clock. It had been there since 1958! Probably been crushed by now. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

Then there was a '35 Ford Phaeton in Longmont, Co that they guy did about what europeancarnut encountered. "It's only getting more valuable" After the tree fell on it and then the <span style="font-weight: bold"> [color:"red"]empty </span> garage it was next to burned and fell on it, it was of zero use. Yup priceless now. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" />

This is one reason I have been to many states looking to save my particular passion. I have been part of saving no less than 10 Amphicars, missed one at the crusher (yes it was flattened minutes before I got there) <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> If we don't save them, they will sooner or later be lost forever to time or naive folks who actually believe they turn to gold eventually on their own. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I will also add what I have said several time via PM, your efforts are appreciated!! I'd bet some who have not said anything agree. I called all that you posted, nobody knew of an Amphi there. I am not sure they know what it is if they tripped over it. I can't really expect them to anyway. It took me all day yesterday and several calls this AM to finally contact Larry's Auto Salvage. Usually only a generic machine. They were friendly and told me what he could.

  7. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Does the bouy in your photo say "No Boats"? </div></div>

Yup it does! Just moments before that pic was shot, I had got into trouble from the Park Rangers about driving into the water off the beach. (My tracks are in the background on the left between the trucks). So just outside the "no boats" the pic was taken by a couple of lovlies in a paddle boat. MMMmmm. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" />

  8. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I hate to drill a non production hole in any thing.

    </div></div>

When I built the hand controls (I am paralyzed) for my Amphicar's 4 speed, manual trans, I went to great lengths to avoid the drill. In the end, I had to drill one hole to pass the clutch cable through to the power booster/master in the trunk.

On my 66 Cadillac I spend the better part of an afternoon reconfiguring a nice stereo to fit the dash instead of the other way around. The Cadillac's radio had both shafts to the left of the face, the new stereo had one on each side.

  9. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I PROMISE I will drive it next time!</div></div>

    I must say I was dissapointed to find that my car was the oldest one there! Your Cadillac looked like a VERY custom '47! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

The conversation was enough to overlook all that modern iron! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

When ya coming up to Berthoud? We can go for a swim at Lonetree which is only about 10 minutes away.

  10. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">not to over rule your amphi-ulous view of the world as you see it</div></div>

Tommy - I hope you're not thinking I am in the CCCA? I am not affiliated with them at all. My lowly Amphicars are not "classic" enough for them (in spite of your earlier list <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />). <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> From what I have seen (Just my opinion), it seems they are a bit too pretentious for my tastes. I only wanted to point out that "Classic" in a general term, not owned by the CCCA and it's members.

You pose some good questions, I would like to know myself. Who decided and how did they come up with their rendition of a "Classic". I guess the question itself has now became a "CLASSIC" <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

  11. I just wanted to wish you some good fortune! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> This is going to be a tough one to sell. At best it books at about $3600. Sadly, even with all the effort you put into it, it is still a Maverick. It is not a real desireable car to many people. It doesn't mean you won't get your price for it, it only means that it will be more difficult to sell.

You may try attaching some good quality photos (each side, front, rear, interior, engine, trunk) here with your message (go to the "edit post" link, and add some). Pictures are one of those tools that may get you an interested buyer, otherwise they may just move on. Now a days, you have to have the info available without much (if any) work to interest them into the sale. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" />

Just some friendly advice I hope makes your sale go quicker. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

  12. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I DARE you guys....find someone who is not so obsessed with the word...that they can control themselves...and NOT use it...!

    </div></div>

    Pete,

Seems you are most obsessed with it.

"Classic" is not a specific term reserved for just for the CCCA's cars, or any single class of autos either. The term "classic" is properly used for numerous other categories. It is a general term that encompasses many things. Even my Amphicar is a true "classic", why? Because of it "Having lasting significance or worth; enduring"

Basically it menas "The best of ____" This is not opinion, it is per The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language.

So, enough of trying to tell us the word "Classic" has only one place in the english language. The CCCA does not have ownership of the word, they only have THEIR interpretation of it in THEIR context.

  13. I have had a couple, this happened a couple of years ago on my way back on a 4000 mile road trip on my Harley. I stopped in Trinidad, Co for fuel. As I pulled in the clutch, SNAP! No clutch! I thought the cable snapped. This is Monday so no bike shops are open. I looked down and it turns out it was just the barrel on the end of the cable that broke. I reached into my sidecar, grabbed a small pair of vice grips, "installed" them to the cable and VOILA! I had a working clutch handle. I used the vice clutch to start of then power shifted most of the last 250 miles home so I wouldn't stress the cable and possibly breaking it off shorter.

  14. Sad day for anyone who appreciates the work involved in the preservation and restoration of any piece of history. <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

What pisses me off more is that it was some [censored] smoker who tossed a cigarette carelessly. We had lots of fires going on around here (Colo) and I was aghast at how many people tossed cigarettes out the window! I got hit in the face with a lit one a couple months ago while on my bike! Yes, I was VERY pissed!!

    Be sure you have her moored in the garage so she doesn't go anywhere without you! <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> <img src="http://www.aaca.org/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

  17. Is there a relay involved? If so, replace it, if not, add one. I suspect that your wiring or button can't handle the juice required to power the horn.

Install it so that your horn button energizes the relay to grab power directly from the battery. Keeping in mind how your car is wired. Typically, the horn has power all the time and only the ground is switched.
