Somebody removed a center cap from this all-original car. It was NOT a BCA or ROA show.

Unbelievable, Alan. I can't imagine the THIEF had a RIV that he needed your wheel center for. And, it seems too large to make a necklace out of (remember all the spring-loaded hood ornaments that got stolen back in the mid-1970's through the mid-1980's?).

Well, you WILL find one to replace yours. If you're like me, I know you want to make your RIV whole again, and immediately so. But, please be as patient as you can, and wait for a good one. I'm sure you've been around the hobby long enough to check the usual RIV and BCA sources. As Dave S. said, this cap isn't common, but one will be out there for you. Best of luck in your search. John

  2. I believe we've seen this car posted for sale in the recent past. Not sure where it was being sold, but someone posted it here for discussion not too long ago. I remember the turned-down, aftermarket tailpipe tip. Funny what one's memory retains, isn't it? This from a guy whose wife is convinced I have almost no memory, since I have a periodic lapse when it comes to putting the toilet seat back down after use. John

  3. Yes, the carb starter switch Maciek pictured in his post is definitely from a newer model BUICK. This may indicate that someone switched out the original carb at some point in the past, and that both his carb and switch are from a newer BUICK. If the car is running well, I would think this is no big deal, and only important if Maciek needs to obtain a carb rebuilding kit at some point in the future. I guess the only other concern with this situation would be if total originality is important to the owner. John

  4. Hard to see the value in these since the 4-door Avanti's were never that popular. Seems like yet another opportunity for someone interested in keeping the "new" Avanti alive to go bankrupt. John   (I've been an Avanti owner for the past 55 years, so I'm not beating on the design or the car itself. Just my observation about the state of the brand, since the Altman's and Leo Newman pulled out.)

  5. Hi, Jim and Century Eight. Not sure if this part will help either of you, but NOS is always good, I feel. This is an NOS 1939 to 1950 small series Second & Third Speed Sliding Transmission Gear. Here's a link to my posting for these...I have TWO available. John

  6. Lots of nice originality with the car, but then some clinkers, which always make a guy start looking more closely. Possibly incorrect running board stainless trim (I'd have to see a close-up photo, but something looks funky, possibly from a slightly newer BUICK), cowl mount radio antenna, but with a radio-delete dash plate and no radio in sight (maybe there's a hidden modern radio somewhere), wrong horn ring, someone forgot to straighten all the dents in the grille nose stainless, and any number of dash, windshield, interior and door closure hardware items incorrectly chromed, (as 1939_Buick mostly mentioned).

The ad didn't show an engine compartment photo, which would have been helpful. Says the BUICK runs and drives well. I do like the way the car sits...nice and original in stance. Like MrEarl, I also think the color is interesting, and would not be a turnoff for me. But, also like MrEarl, I'm a little odd! John

  7. Hi, Jim. Good to see you posting again. I was contemplating doing a post here, asking if you were O.K. That's exciting news about your engine head being ready. I bet there are many of us interested in learning how that turns out for you.

Any flooding by you over the weekend? I know the water was unusually high in that "stream" going through Washburn. Best regards, John

  8. Hi again, Dosmo. Yes, the helpful chat on Old Gas has certainly slowed down over the past two to three years. Some of the old gang who used to always reply to inquiries have passed away, while other have perhaps gotten tired of the flood of very basic questions from newbies who have gravitated to the old gas and oil collectibles hobby now that it's "hot". THIS LAST COMMENT WAS DEFINITELY NOT AIMED AT YOU, DOSMO.

I suggest you first need to make a decision whether or not to keep this pump in question. If you want it, then you can attack the logistics of moving and storing the pump (along with seeking a good local divorce attorney with experience in representing the male in a marriage). If you decide you don't want it, then get back on Old Gas and ask for some pricing help. Paul Bell on that forum is a very straight shooter, and will give you good advice...even if it's just him providing the names of a couple of other guys to call. I would favor him over Scott Anderson at Scotty's Garage for a number of reasons, which I won't share here. Then, I'd advertise the pump for sale on Old Gas, with a pick-up-only stipulation. The huge Iowa Gas meet will be held in Des Moines, Iowa late in July. This greatly expands YOUR market for a potential buyer, since many pump collectors and vendors from all over the Midwest, South, and East will be making their way to and from this meet in Iowa. These guys would have no problem swinging by your location to pick up a pump they were purchasing. Again, good luck to you. John
