  1. Al - forgot to include info on my jets and a couple other things. B&B SV-22 jets are 155/160 in my original harder to start car and 155/165 in my "new" car. First car has a Bosch DU-4 mag that was rebuilt, the "new" car has an OEM Eisemann G-4 mag. Plugs are Stitt 19's in original car, Champion W16Y in new car.
  2. Hi Al - Sorry we didn't have more time to discuss at Hershey. Your car looked great. I seem to have the opposite problem with one of my cars; when cold you can't seem to get enough gas to it. Always have to prime it. If really cold I use my father's trick of heating spark plugs in the oven (not real convenient if out in the field). I found that switching to a big 6V truck battery and the heaviest battery cables I could find (I think are 00) helped immensely in terms of cranking speed. I have also been suspicious of the timing. Some previous owner switched the mag drive coupling from the OEM spline with the cross shaft to a simple transverse bolt through the whole assembly. I have checked the timing statically but the engine does not seem to respond to advance/retard like my other one. I think I need to pull the front cover and see if the camshaft is in the proper relationship to the crank. I always have to partially advance the timing (dangerous!) to get it to start when cold. My other car is a bit new to me to understand it's habits but does seem more willing to start and is more reactive to the spark advance.
  3. Thanks for the info John. It was just as I feared, some of the articles in those final issues were really awful. I am in the same boat as you, out the cost of five issues. And I agree, continuing to solicit people for money is indeed outright fraud. My father's old friend Scott Bailey must be rolling in his grave.
  4. Anybody know what is going on with Automobile Quarterly? I know publisher passed away a while back but there were 3 issues published after that. The "current" issue is 52-1, 1st quarter of 2012, and now here we are in the 4th quarter of 2013. Website looks like they are still ready to take your money but they don't answer email.
  5. Fellow Mercer owners: We will be having our 3rd annual get together of the Mercer Associates at Hershey this year. The meeting will take place on Thursday afternoon at 5PM at Stan's spot in the Orange Field OBN14-17. As is customary, this will be an informal get together where everyone will have an opportunity to share Mercer news and stories from the past year. Please pass the word to other Mercer owners you know who might not visit this forum. We can also look forward to seeing Al Mercer's beautifully restored Runabout in the show on Saturday.

    1920 Mercer Limo

Heater may or may not be OEM from the factory. The 1920 catalog description of equipment for the Limousine does not mention a heater: "The equipment is very complete, consisting of cord rail, wool carpet to match upholstery, walnut toilet cases, dictograph, foot rests, two corner lights, dome light, reflecting mirror over driver's seat, silk curtains to match trimming, cowl ventilator, Yale locking system, nickel plated metal fittings." Heater does not show in Rand McNally Series 5 parts catalog, although there is no mention of anything related to the Limousine in that book. Practically speaking there are only three sources of heat they might have used: electric, radiator fluid or exhaust heat. Electric unlikely with a 6V system. If the tubes are small (copper?), would make me wonder if was for radiator fluid. Hope your owner realizes that they have the only known surviving Mercer Limo which has been claimed to have belonged to the Roebling family. I remember it from Amelia Island in Y2000. If the entire interior is being redone, they should preserve at least a sample of the materials that are removed for the historical record no matter how deteriorated.

  11. Thanks to all the Mercer folk who came to the Mercer Associates meeting at Hershey this year. I think everyone enjoyed the get-together... maybe we can get Fred to dress up in one of those white jumpsuits from Pebble Beach next year. Special thanks to Stan for supplying the refreshments and snacks, writing up this year's Mercer Magic, and for making up more great Mercer swag. Hope to see you all again next year if not sooner.
