Looks like some customization with the running boards removed, cycle fenders and forward spare mounting. Perhaps the work of George Bentel's shop.

6th annual Mercer Associates meeting at Hershey
21raceabout replied to 21raceabout's topic in Mercer
Also - wear your M E R C E R sweater for the group photo if you purchased one through Clifford Zink. -
There will be a new location this year for the 6th annual Mercer Associates meeting at Hershey. Corky Coker has graciously offered to host the meeting at the Coker Tire Tent in the middle of the Chocolate Field. The meeting will be on Thursday afternoon (10/6/2016) at 4PM. Stop by to catch up with fellow Mercer owners and enthusiasts.

Thanks Ivan - The exhaust roller on #4 cylinder got chewed up and damaged the cam lobe. This may have been due in part to excess wear of the cam shaft thrust bearing (center die cast bearings?) which has allowed it to shift aft 0.125-0.150", or by some mis-assembly of the cam shaft by a previous owner. This is evidenced as the front timing chain gear seems to be in the right plane with the crank and tensioner, and the front tip of the cam shaft is recessed in the bronze cross shaft gear. Either way this would have reduced the contact area and in turn increased the contact stresses. The material from the roller has come off in little chips, some of which have found their way into the pan, so I think I am into a compete rebuild. I also noticed that #4 EXT valve may have been sticky which would not have helped the situation. I have ordered a new set of valves and guides from the gentleman who has made some recently for Fred H. Fred is also in the process of getting new rollers for a client's engine.

I have a 1920 era 4 cyl engine with roller lifters. One of the rollers was apparently stuck and damaged the adjacent camshaft lobe. I also have a spare camshaft but some of the lobes have significant rust pitting. Does anyone have (successful) experience having camshaft lobes welded and reground to the original profile? Are there issues getting repaired lobes to sufficient hardness? Special heat treat or coatings (parkerizing)needed? Long term any issues with fatigue/cracking? Thanks for any advice/recommendations

Another great reunion at the Roebling Museum. Many thanks to Karl and Tim, all the other owners who brought cars, the museum staff and everyone else who made it such a great weekend. A few more pics...

Sounds great; really looking forward to the event. Out and about with the tourists on a recent foggy day.

RE: brandanh's note on 31 Mar 2013; I own the 1920 Sporting Chassis # 5304 with engine #5226 which also has the valve cover from engine #6242. i was aware that a Mr. Duby owned the car around 1945. I was wondering if it was originally owned by George Schulz (since new?). Did Mr. Duby then sell the car (directly?) to Joe Faltin in Manchester NH as next owner? Any leads appreciated. Thanks

Given that the car I saw at the Seal Cove museum several years ago had wire wheels, I believe it is a "Sporting" model. Mercer did not have a "Sport Touring" model. Per the photos in Type 35o's posting, it would either be a "Sporting" (Rudge-Whitworth wire wheels) or a "Touring"(Howard demountable wood wheels). Per Ivan's post, the "Sporting" will have 3 storage compartments behind the front passenger's seat accessed from the rear passenger compartment whereas the "Touring" will have "roll top desk" type shutters hiding the jump seats.

$um Fun - What car are you working on? Ivan is correct, Schaeffer and Long in Magnolia NJ is your best bet. -

The 2014 Great Race started a few miles from my place at the beach in Ogunquit Maine on Saturday morning (6/21). It was a perfect day weather-wise for the teams. Spent a little time before the start with fellow Mercer owner David Reeder from Fort Smith AR. David was the Grand Champion winner in 2006 and was 2nd in that class last year. His navigator this year, as in prior years, is his grandson Sawyer Stone. They are in a 1933 Ford Victoria #4 this year. Good luck Dave and Sawyer!

Need Info Regarding Penberthy SV22 Carburetor on 1921 Mercer
21raceabout replied to carbdoc's topic in Mercer
Al- For what it's worth I usually need to "flick" the choke to fully closed for just a second or two when cranking it over and then leave it 1/2 closed once it catches until the car warms up. -
Hello - Anyone know is the what make/model of the car from the 1920's? Looks sort of like a Maxwell based on radiator shell but the emblem is squarish. Thanks in advance 21raceabout

Need Info Regarding Penberthy SV22 Carburetor on 1921 Mercer
21raceabout replied to carbdoc's topic in Mercer
Jeff - According to all the handbooks of the day (A.L. Dyke's &c.) I have seen, the pick-up plunger was held in the "up" position by intake vacuum. When the vacuum drops off, the plunger drops and squirts an extra charge into the carb. I have included a couple pages from the 1925 edition of Automobile Engineering (5 vol set) on B&B carbs. I think the picture is bigger/better than Dyke's. Note this seems to be an earlier version than the SV-22 with an air valve on the primary. Also there is nothing (not even a spring) between the plunger and the cast bolt at the bottom. The Mercer owner's manual says to refer to the manual from the carburetor manufacturer but I have never seen one for the SV-22. Many owners think the best place for an SV-22 is on a shelf in their garage and have replaced with other makes (Stromberg, Winfield &c.) but I am a purist myself. 21Raceaboutsv-22 gas engrng 2.pdf sv-22 gas engnrg 1.pdf -

Need Info Regarding Penberthy SV22 Carburetor on 1921 Mercer
21raceabout replied to carbdoc's topic in Mercer
Jeff - Please find attached a dimensional drawing of P/N 13818 Pick-up Plunger. The fit in the carb body is not tight, may be 1/32" loose as you found on the one you are working on. If you have and idea of how I could measure the mating bore of the carb let me know. (Sorry I don't have pin gauges larger than 1/2"). It is a little odd that there is not a spring under the plunger; on the SV-14 carb (used on late 20's Studebakers I am told) there is a spring under the plunger but does not show up in the Mercer parts book for SV-22 nor did I find one in my carb. I may check my other Mercer. Do you have or make the gaskets for the bottom of the float bowl and the second large bolt that traps the plunger? If so, I could use some. 21RaceaboutSV-22 Pick-up Plunger.pdf -

Carbdoc; I'll try to help. Please find attached a couple pdf files from the parts manual. See if you can figure out which parts you need measured and we can go from there. Does this car (carburetor) have the manually adjustable (from the dash) air valve? 21Raceabout SV22-1.pdf SV22-2.pdf
