  1. I have three 90's and a 91. One coupe and three verts. I do not keep up with daily driver type mileage, but on the highway, with two people and luggage, air on and driving about 74 mph my Reattas get from 27 to 29 depending on which one I drive. My 93 Olds 98 Regency with the same 3800 engine gets 20 to 30 mpg and my wife's Riviera 3800 supercharged gets about 25. Her 94 LaSabre got 28 mpg. So there you go- I figure the 3800 should get around 25 - 30 depending on the gearing and driving a reasonable speed. On one trip from PA to SC in the Olds with no passengers and keeping it at the speed limit, I actually averaged 31 mpg.

I have always been more than pleased with the GM 3800 for performance and gas mileage. Maybe that along with reliability is why Car and Driver voted it one of the top 10 engines a few years back.

  2. Who picked Chuck? How does this process work? How much does a person have to pay to get a coveted BOD spot?

It never ceases to amaze me why some folks on this forum go out of their way to make sinister comments about the BCA and its officers. I hold no position in the BCA, nor do I wish to, however I am a member and I have a great deal of respect for those who are willing to give of their time and money to make the club an enjoyable experience for the members.

I have served as an officer in several different car clubs and for the most part it it has been an enjoyable albeit time consuming effort. Generally folks become officers because they generously offer their time and are voted in by members.

I fail to understand why some who are not members of an organization and contribute nothing to it feel some calling to stand outside and criticize those who work hard to contribute. What is even more baffling is the profound ignorance of the comments which reflect that in most cases the person who is critical has no knowledge of the workings of the organization.

Civility may not be dead, but it is surely in a weakened state and the internet may be speeding its demise.

  3. Steve,

Not interested in getting into the urination tournament, but jeepers, I see what you mean. It can look black. I can also prove that it was shipped Mineral Blue. If only GM had kept records like BMC we would not need to have this discussion. By the way I have judged several Polo Green cars and know exactly what they look like.

  4. Just had one installed. Cost new a little over $1,500. Used are available, but shipping becomes difficult and costly. Where are you located? I may be able to give you some ideas.

  5. Interesting thread and some great ideas. The Reatta Division might be able to handle such a project, but I am not certain it would be worth the potential criticism about how selections were made. I also noted with interest the comment about the few volunteers on this forum. I am not sure everyone who reads and comments on the forum knows that the Reatta Division "staff" is essentially five volunteers. The Director, the Ass't Director, the Sec/Treas, the newsletter editor and the logo wear coordinator and several of us have more to do than we can say grace over. We also have a three member Advisory Board and a Nomination Committee which are also volunteers.

If there is enough interest expressed, we could at least talk about it.

  6. I have a burgundy steering wheel that will fit a 90 or 91 reatta. This wheel has been totally refurbished and looks new. I purchased it several years ago for a car with burgundy interior which is now long gone. I remember paying around $300 for this wheel. If anyone is interested I would be open to a reasonable offer. You can email me at eafarnell@gmail.com.

  7. Actually took a little time off from Reattas to go to a British car show. Took two MGs and my Healey. Jim Finn told me to sit all day in the one I liked best in case rapture included the car. Sun got too hot on the show field and just decided to sit in the shade and eat Italian ice. Luckily got to take all three home so I guess the guy was wrong again.

  8. I have some pretty good grey seats for sale if someone would like to make an offer. They are 16 way seats that came from my 89 Reatta. The passenger seat is very good. The driver seat has a split in the thigh bolster that is about 4" long and there is a slight amout of wear on the left side of the seat back. These seats are not in perfect condition, but would be an excellent low cost replacement for someone who has bad seats. The driver side bolster could be easily recovered and should not cost much to do. If you are interested, send me a private email.

  9. Sheldon,

You keep referring to a "vent cover". Can you be more specific about what part you are trying to remove. If you are referring to the black piece with silver trim that surrounds the instrument cluster, radio and HVAC controls, the posters have described in detail how to remove that part. There are only four torx screws, one at the top of each AC vent and two directly over the steering wheel. Once you remove those screws the black/silver plastic surround will easily pull away from the dash. You may have to tilt the steering wheel down to get it out once it is seperated from the dash.

  10. Jim,

I think you and Marc are talking about two different latches. Marc seems to be talking about the difference between the glove box latch and the rear storage compartment latch.

You seem to be comparing rear storage compartment latches on convertibles vs coupes?

Now I am confused???, but that is fairly normal.

  11. I am a peace with myself on this issue. I have never really wanted a 91 polo green Reatta convertible. I own a perfectly good British racing green 69 MGC which I can prove is original. Oops, it has a tan cloth top, and I can prove that was not original, but I like it better than black vinyl. Interior is easy. 69 MGC's were offered in three colors. Black, black or black.

Should I drive this jewel to Danvers so we have a green convertible in the area? Actually polo green and British racing green were very close.

This whole thread reminds me of the argument about the true color for the Austin Healey 3000 engine. The argument has gone on for years as to what shade of green was correct. Actually Johnson outboard motor green is pretty close to many "original" cars I have seen.

At a National Meet in Snowmass, WV a number of years ago, Donald Healey was in attendance. I was in the room during a question and answer session with Mr. Healey and the question of engine paint came up. I still get a kick out of his response that was something along the lines of "we had a green color we used, but if we happened to run low and needed to paint some engines we might add some other color like black to make it through the run." Having seen many concourse Healeys that have obviously never been touched, you can be sure that Mr. Healey knew what he was talking about.

  12. It depends on the purpose of the data base. If just to record which vehicles survive I would say the current color.

For my British cars I can get a certificate from British Heritage Trust that tells me by Car Number how the car left the factory. Does not GM have that ability? I guess not since the polo green 91 convertible issue comes around about every month. Both the MG club and the Austin Healey clubs that I belong to maintain a registry and I believe they record only the car number.

    Just thoughts from a non-expert.

  13. Marck,

I was going to post something similar about it was a pleasure to meet you also. I hadn't yet because I have been trying to keep up with my emails from my Iphone and that takes me forever to type out messages. This morning I got back from church before Ed is back from his church so I had an oportunity to use his computer.

As we came upon your car and you just happened to be in front of it, I knew right away it had to be you so when I addressed you by name I figured I had about a 99% chance of being right. :)

You have a very nice car there and it was a pleasure also for Ed and I to meet you and your grandfather. Good car guys.

    Jim
