  3. You know Brad, some of us go to hot rodding sites, too. Where is "that" signature of yours? Mike Mmmmmm...dinner...

  5. I haven't posted here in a long while...I've been really wrapped up in my daily driver '62 Suburban and my gasser project, so have been frequenting those types of sites. But last weekend I scored a trans I've been chasing for several years. I've got a '54 Special, and it was my daily driver down in Florida for a year and a half. The weak 5-bolt manual trans went out, and then stuff happened so the car got sidelined for the last 5 years. A couple months ago I pulled the trans out (finally) and went to swap in a spare I'd found, but it turns out the spare was an earlier one...the tail shaft was a bit shorter. The thought of gutting one trans and swapping it into the other didn't appeal to me. Knowing these transmissions are weak, I've kept my eyes open for a beefier 6-bolt trans since buying the car. About 6 months ago, someone posted one for sale on one of my other sites (a hot rodding site...GASP!). It came with the trans and torque ball, bellhousing, lower tin cover, clutch fork (with both ball retainer fingers being in good shape), clutch/pressure plate and 322 FLYWHEEL! The whole shooting match. When they pop up on ebay, the transmissions alone seem to go for around $300, flywheels in the $100-$150 range (sometimes more), and the bellhousings (different from the Special I have) usually go for between $100 and $200. And I never see the tin covers or clutch forks. I got the whole thing for $125! I finally picked the parts up last weekend. And he through in a cherry '56 322 driver's side dual exhaust manifold to boot. After I get the Suburban back on the road, I'm going to work on getting the Special back in the fleet. I still have dreams of building a hot '56 322 for it, but in the meantime, just having it moving and back together will be nice for several reasons. A) I'll be driving the car again. I'll have two vintage cars on the road to choose from, and when one needs work I won't have to rely on the wife to shuttle me around (Nothing worse than a grown man calling home and saying "I'm done mom, come pick me up!) and C) I'll have a nice, big, fat opening in the shop. Several, actually. The car, the hood, the radiator, the engine on the stand, and the two 5-bolt transmissions will all be out! Woo-Hoo! I'm looking forward to Buicking again. -Brad

  20. From what I've been told by the DMV here, Georgia didn't issue titles for cars when they were BRAND NEW up through the '60s. I know a children's home that has taken car donations, and they've had a hard time getting rid of a '66 Mustang and a '55 T-Bird (!!!) because they didn't have titles originally. My '62 Suburban doesn't have a title either. Didn't need anything more than a bill of sale to get tags at the DMV. Just one more reason I love Georgia. -Brad

    "54 Muscle"

Man, I can't wait to come over and see this! I don't think I've EVER been this excited for a friend getting a car before. Factory hot rods always make me giggle--and this is absolutely a factory hot rod! Big engine, lightest body, no power options, manual trans...and the dog dish hubcaps are the crowning touch!!! I absolutely love the fact that this car was built before the 265-powered '55 Chevrolet. The only thing better would be Chrysler Hemi cars, but those were full-size cars, not a "small" Buick Century body. Okay everybody--we now have to find Mr. Earl a 2x4 Edmunds intake. He's on his own for chrome factory valve and spark plug covers. -Brad
  22. Get a side load. It just seems easier loading big objects in it. Scat is a really good brand, as are the ones from TP. Absolutely get a foot pedal--your hand will about die after a short period of time. As said, a good moisture trap will help. Also, keep the hopper full of media, and don't put very greasy things in there--it plugs up. Degrease parts first, then you'll be fine. If things do get plugged, you can back-feed it: Put your gloved hand over the tip and hit the trigger. The air backs down the siphon tube into the media and blows out any obstruction. A dust bag/vacuum system is also a big plus. Don't bother trying to do it with an old vacuum cleaner, you'll kill it. The dust is fine enough that it'll go past the filter. Finally, one thing that makes using them easier is to turn the lights off in the shop--you'll see inside the cabinet a lot better. I've had access to a lot of different cabinets in the last 10 years, and what I've mentioned are the things I've liked from other cabinets. Also, run a ground strap to it--the static electricity will really light you up! Even through the gloves. Usually at your arms where they're going through the cabinet. -Brad
  23. Oooooo....those look good.... Here's a quick tip for you, too: '60s and '70s Chevy trucks use that same bolt pattern. My daily driver is a '62 Suburban with 6-lug wheels. It'd almost be enough to convert over to 5 lug for those wheels! You might want to try posting them on Stovebolt.com, a site for Chevy trucks. I hope you sell them. I really don't have the money for them, and it'd eat me up! That's a good price. -Brad
  24. <div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Not a Buick crash but let this be a lesson to all of us!!! Picture of a horrible highway accident in Germany. The picture may be kind of hard to take. If you look closely you can see what appear to be some survivors of the accident still in the wreckage. Although the picture is quite graphic, it makes you realize how quickly our loved ones can be taken from us. This is really gut wrenching so I will not openly display it here. If you have a strong stomach and can handle it you can open the attachment on your own. </div></div> Oh the humanity! The horror! I've got lap belts from Year One in my '62 Suburban daily driver, and I'd really like to get some 3-point harness for the front seats...it's a knee-knocker cab with a teeth-breaker dash. (The cab has a wrap-around windhshield like, much like a '54 Buick, and where the windshield frame wraps around is exposed when you open the door--and it's right at knee level when you get in. The dash is solid steel baby! With a cowl that looks like the '54 gauge area, on both sides of the dash. Solid steel baby! The lap belts I have are with the plain latches, like on an airplane. They look period-correct, if you're not hanging around a bunch of concours purists. 98-percent of the people who see the vehicle will never think "Geez, those aren't the right seat belts!" Best part is, they were really innexpensive, even without my employee discount. Shoulder harnesses would keep me from messing up my face, but my big concern is always getting thrown from the vehicle. In the car you've got a chance...your skull doesn't have much chance against a tree, rock, fence post, gaurd rail or a concrete road. -Brad
