    Tail lights

I would think the red goes back to the red lantern on back of trains. I had a 1916 Elgin that had a red tail light so it was before that.
  2. I think Joe Goss up in Lafayette IN has an Empire. he is occasionally on the Forum. I'll send him a note about this thread.
  3. At any AACA Show you fill out this form and the judges confirm what you mark when judging the car. http://beaver.vinu.edu/hpof_form.JPG
  4. A friend and Camaro collector is selling a real nice original with one repaint for $15K (I think) http://beaver.vinu.edu/AACA-03s-pringfling/PICT0323.JPG it is pretty much a plain jane 327 RS Very nice car interior and engine look as nice as the outside. He is not a computer person, so I if our interested Drop me and Email and I'll send you his number. Car is located in Southern Indiana
  5. Florida DMV has a link on there page about getting titiles but it doesn't work. But I am sure if you called them they could fill you in. If it is a problem you can always get a title in another state then use it to get a FL title.
  6. Depends on the state you live in. Some states it's easy some states it's hard. Most states it can be done. Let people Know what state you live in and maybe they can give you better advice. I think you can do just about anywhere it just a matter of at what cost and how much hassle.
  7. As I have posted before how last month I placed my 1955 Thunderbird inside the Technology Center at Vincennes University with AACA signs. http://beaver.vinu.edu/02-22-2004%20Tech%20bird/index.html Put flyers around inviting all to attend our regional chapter AACA meeting as a guest and tour John and Sue Smith?s Car collection. I ended up taking 3 students to the meeting with 2 saying they were going to Join AACA. I followed up this week one had sent his paper work in and joined up the other hadn?t got around to filling out the paper work yet, but he said he was going to do later this week..(I?d say 50/50) Following some suggestion the bird was too high of a dollar car for the students to relate to. I took the Bird out a last weekend and replace it with my 1970 Rokon Trailbreaker Class 5A senior winner and a Boss Hoss Trike to get their attention. Photos of the Rokon and Boss in the Tech Center are at: http://beaver.vinu.edu/03-27-2004%20Rokon%20in%20tech/index.html I put flyers around campus, similar to this: http://beaver.vinu.edu/hirsh.htm The conversion from a Word document to a web page messed it up a little but you get the idea. As I stated before in my post our region (LOVeR) passed a resolution that all Junior and Students can join our region free of charge, so a students total cost for National and Regional clubs would be $12 a years. I am surprise and I have talk to 2 students interesting in going already, so I think the Camaros are a bigger draw than one of the finest eclectic collection in the state. But what ever it takes. I?ll post my result after our next meeting Anyone reading this post withing driving distance is more than welcome to attend our next meeting or any LOVeR meeting.
  8. Send me info on the show jwolf@indian.vinu.edu
  9. AACA Youth Recruiting Results: On a previous post I told of my efforts: Displaying my car in the Technology Building Signs Cards Posters in all the dorms and buildings. http://beaver.vinu.edu/02-22-2004%20Tech%20bird/DSC_9817.html Well it came the day of the meeting and I hadn?t heard from anyone. Spring Break was the week before the meeting that didn?t help. Several of the business cards had been take from the car but no calls. Late in the day I stopped by the Tech building to dust off the T-bird and started talking to a student, he said he would like to go, I told him I would drive and we set up a place to meet, he said he might bring a friend. When I met him he had 2 friends with him so I took.: 1 female automotive repair student 1 male automotive repair student 1 male computer networking student We left about 5:00 PM the meeting was about 70 miles away, I drove my wife?s Toyota Prius and they enjoyed the novelty of it. We stopped and I treated them to dinner. I had made arrangements to tour the Smith?s Car collection 1 hour before the meeting. They enjoyed the collection and talking to John and Sue. We had the meeting introduced them and talk in length about recruiting younger members. I explained AACA Student membership; most members didn?t know it existed. We pass a motion the all Junior and Student members would be allowed to join our region dues free. So now junior or students total cost for the national and regional AACA is the $10 or $12. After the meeting we talk to Jerry Hirsh and he invited the student over to see his Camaro and pace car collection and his restoration in progress. They really enjoyed it and we talked to Jerry for a long time. We arrive back to our meeting point in Vincennes at a little after 1:00 am. After talking to them I think 2 of them are going to join. They had concerns that they were graduation in May, I explained that the national membership will follow them anywhere they move to and the regional would be free so they have nothing to loose and it would look good on their resume? to be an AACA member. Be side if they would have had to buy their own dinner they would have spent the $12 anyway. One of the students shot about 20 minutes of Video at John and Sue Smith?s collection but ran out of tape before Hirsh?s collection. She told me today that they had already shown the tape to several people. Of course they blamed me for them missing their Thursday morning classes, but I was at work at 8am and I?m an old man. Next month we are meeting at Jerry Hirsh?s garage with his Camaro collection so I will give it another try next month and see if I can get a few more members. I am going to take my T-bird out of the tech building and replace it with a few of my restored motorcycles. Put up some new posters advertising the Camaro collection and see. Not as good as I hoped but some progress and at least students in some circles are talking about AACA. I need to check with the students to make sure they follow though with their AACA applications.
  10. My 54 dodge had had a starter pedal just to the right and above the gas peddle.
  11. Almost funny, (funny if we all hadn't have been there) on the classic bird list there was a guy who has work 2 years to cure his bird running hot. Finally last week he found out his temp guage pegged hot at less than 200 deg.
  12. It may not be the case, but a while back on the Classic Bird List; they were talking about a bunch of defective water pumps (to much impeller clearance). I don?t know if there was any similar problem with any Chevy pumps. Little birds are known for overheating. The 4 big things that help are 1. New 4 row HE radiator. 2. Underdrive water pump pulley one inch smaller than stock. This speeds up the pump and the fan. 3. A water pump baffle (stamped steel that tightens up clearances in water pump) 4. Water Wetter or some other coolant additive. (Several people swear by these products) most say the lower temp 10 deg. I have 1&2 in my bird and never had any heat problems.
  13. So it sounds pretty much like a modern clutch. Usually the amount the pressureplate/clutch move is not easy seen by eye. Can you get anything in and tap the clutch with then pressure place is released. On a modem clutch it has to release on both sides. If you have to: you could always loosen up all the pressure plate bolts and pry or tap the clutch loose. But by the time you do that it would just about as easy to remove the transmission and find out why it stuck and fix it right. Most old transmissions aren?t very heavy and come out easy.
  14. Have you checked to make sure the linkage is working? Have you checked that the throw-out bearing hasnt fallen through the fingers? Have you check to see if any fingers are broken? As far as how to free it, it depends greatly on what type of clutch it is, On the old 2 disk floater, I would think rotating the adjustment housing would free it. I would take it way out of adjustment to the loose or slip side. On a modern clutch (1954), I had stuck I found the flywheel bolts had backed off and were jamming against the clutch, that happened driving down the road, when I went to stop the clutch wouldn?t disengage.
  15. I don?t disagree to anything that has been said we can?t make as young person like old cars, but we need to do a better job of exposing the hobby to them. Our kids are exposed and are not the problem, but, 50% of the kids to come from a home with no father or male present in the house hold. In most single parent homes the provider is totally occupied make a living and don?t participate is as many hobby as traditional families do. With that said there are a lot of youth out there that their only exposures to cars is for transportation or the sport compact owned by the older kid down the street. AACA and it?s members need to work on exposing these kids. The old saying ?You can lead a horse to water but you can?t make him drink? is still true. But I am trying to lead as many as possible to the water anyway some will drink. As I have does many time get a kid behind the wheel of giving rides or even letting them hand crank (with proper instruction). The suggestions of taking our old cars to cruise-ins it great. These great old cars sitting our garages isn?t going the peak anybodies interest. With our next AACA Region meeting only 2.5 weeks away I have stepped up my campaign. I put flyers in all the dorms and campus buildings inviting student, faculty and staff to attend our next meeting as my guest and get a free tour of John and Sue Smith?s Museum. Our next meeting will be held and John and Sue Smith?s Car and Motorcycle Museum about 60 miles away. The Smith have an eclectic collection of about 40+ cars, trucks, motorcycles ranging to 00?s to the 80?s and tons of memorabilia. On the Flyer I include ad couple of pictures from the Smith?s museum. I know a lot of you know John and Sue and two nicer people you can not find and if their attitude toward cars doesn?t promote the hobby I don?t know what will. Our meeting is on the 17th, I?ll let everybody know how it goes. My 12 year old daughter is a junior member and as she gets older I hope she will want to stay a member. If you have and older child who is in AACA, next Christmas think about giving them a life membership to AACA, can anyone think of a better gift that keep giving to their entire lifetime? I am still trying to get AACA to allow junior members to enter vehicles in national meets in their own name but that is another issue. Nothing thrills 12 year old like a trophy with their own name on it. In our small (25 member) region we have two junior members who would like to show mini bikes in class 5A. They currently do we just have to register the bikes in our names and the trophy and presentation is in our name. But they do all the work and cleaning as well a are present for the judging. 5a is a great class to start kids in on.
  16. From I have been learning the last few months, I think even you are missing the boat on the High school and college age youth. They don?t care about 70 Chevelles or Camaros. Right now in our Auto Body Program Senior Lab we have being painted A 69 Corvette roadster, 85 Corvette Coupe, 69 Camaro, 62 Nova drag car, 70 442, Late 60?s Maverick Grabber, 3 SUVs , 2 pick-ups and a several assorted Sport Compacts having body kits added. What gets all the attention the 3-5 year old Sport Compacts. When High School kids tour they head right for the Hondas and such. Most of these older cars are being done for the kid?s fathers who have the money to put in to them. I know it is hard to believe but the 70 Camaros are the cars of these kid?s fathers not their own. If you remember wanting to buying a new 1970 you are real close if not over 50 years old. Unfortunately at 50 you no longer qualify as youth. Get out talk to some youth, the show they like on TV is ?High Rev Tuners?, not ?American Muscle Car?. True AACA may need to recruit the 35- 45 year olds too, but the younger ones are a greater challenge. A 70 Camaro on the logo is not the answer, exposing, educating and creating and interest in automotive history and old cars is the solution. I find if I can get to talk to them one on one, I can spark their interest. Kids are amazed that 4 valves per cylinder weren?t first used by Olds in the 90?s, that the GNX wasn?t the first turbo charged car on the streets .they think NOS is new I show them articles about NOS being banned from racing as far back as the teens. I found almost everything they think is new was tried a long time ago. This is not going to make them join the bandwagon but it starts a interest that can develop as they get older in to a full blown passion. It may not even develop till the cars of their youth the late 90?s are eligible for AACA. After that hopefully they will develop an appreciation for the really old stuff like we did.
  17. We do the Mall thing once a year; this will be our fourth year. Photos of lasts years at http://beaver.vinu.edu/03-30-2003%20AACA%20Mall%20show/index.html This year?s display is March at Washington Square Mall in Evansville IN. They don?t pay us and they have a lot of rules and we have to provide insurance for the weekend so the club does has some expense in it. It is held at the old declining mall as the new mall has so many kiosks there wouldn?t be room for any cars other than the few spots they rent to local car dealers. We haven?t had any real luck recruiting member partly because most people shop at the new mall. This year we are printing a flyer with our 2004 schedule on it to pass out.
  18. Well after 3 days of the car on display with my phone number highly visible on it have receive Zip, Zero, Nada calls about AACA. Last night I printed up some business cars with a photo of the car, my name address, phone numbers, and ?For Information on AACA? printed on top and put them in holders at the corners of the car to make it easier for interested parties to call me. We will see if this helps. I?ll check this evening to see if any of the cards are gone.
  19. Most Amphicars a mechanically very similar. If there are pictures you can tell close to a year . Late 64 and 65 on have a bilge blower marked by a vent in the driver?s side font fender. 65 and after have a lip on rocker panel and around the rear wheel well. 64 and earlier don?t. 65 and later the dash is painted black 64 and earlier it is the exterior color. 67 and later have a very tall flag pole.
  20. My intent is to change cars every 30 or so days, Try to get a large variety if cars and motorcycles, including some HPOF vehicles. We need to open these kids eyes to something other that sport compacts. I will use all my vehicles the try to get some from other AACA members to display, getting them in the winter time isn't going to be a problem, the summer may be a little harder. The building wasn?t really designed with putting vehicles in and out but it is doable just nothing you would want to do everyday. Insurance is an issue; the University has none on your car it is up to you. Like most collectors who like to drive there cars about all I can afford is $1000 deductible so I guess a grand is all I am risking by displaying it.
  21. (second attachement) Here is the sign.
  22. As I have in the past, I keep trying to get some younger members in AACA. This is my latest attempt; I?ll let you know how if it works. I got permission to put my 1955 Thunderbird inside the atrium of the Technology Building at Vincennes University. (See Attachments) At the corner of the car I put a sign ?AACA is looking for Younger members? with some basic information about AACA and our Local Region with my Name, Email and both phone numbers, I included an invitation to attend one of our local meetings as my guest. You can?t walk in to the building with out noticing a Torch red 55 Thunderbird in the center of the room. About 4000 students a week attend classes in the Technology Building. I?ll let you know how many calls I get and if I can convert any of them in to new members.
  23. I would guess by you quote ?Volkswagen under the hood? you are referring to a kit car several companies offered 31 Alfa Romeo in the mid 70?s. Kits such as the Kadison-Kelson could be bought for around $1K or less, buy a used bug for $300 and you were in business. Most had no or poor tops, no heaters and were about a usable as a Dune Buggy. Unfortunately the value of these have not faired any better than there worth when built. They are a hard sell, usually selling very cheap. 1937hp45 is about right for a fiberglass kit. If it is one of the more expensive Aluminum bodied kits I could bring $3K. Kits/replicas have little "if any" historic value and are not allowed to compete in AACA events. So if your trying to sell it here, your on the wrong forum. My suggestion, if you like it, keep it and have fun with it. It is not going to make you rich.
  24. Got out my Nov-Dec 2000 Antique Automobile. " On dispay were two Marathon Vehicles a 1912 K20 Roadster and as 1914 Runner Touring car." "Nashville was the home to Marathon Motor Works, the only vehicle totally manufactured in the South."
