1. rpgs400
It may be difficult to find just one of the caps that you are looking for.
If you can't buy one, you might be able to make one. Use the dish part from a new or repro chevy rally derby cap (the one that says "disc brake") and a new or reproduction Buick 5 spoke rally center cap. Drill the four rivets out of the center cap, remove the retaining spring and drill and tap the holes where the rivets were. Once the center cap is drilled you can attach it to the derby cap dish with screws. Use a piece of hard foam rubber (about 1.5" square x 1/2" thick) between the "dish" and the Buick medallion to hold the medallion in place (like the factory did).
The only difference will be that this derby cap center will be about 1/4" higher becase the 5 spoke center cap is taller than the original derby cap. I have not tried this yet, but looking at one of my disassembled derby caps and a 5 spoke rally wheel cap it seems like it would work.
After 6 years without a cap it may be worth a try.
------------------
'68 GS400 Convert
[This message has been edited by caGSxlr8 (edited 10-25-2000).]
  2. I am curious as to how many people using this site own '68 GS400's, GS350's or GS California's / Colorodo's. Since 1968 was the 2nd largest production year for GS's I wonder how many are left? I was thinking about starting a registry for '68 Gran Sports, but only if there was enough interest.
I own a '68 GS400 convert with PS,PB,PW,Auto,AM-FM,8-track, Buckets,Console,Tilt wheel,Rally wheels (with trim rings). The color is Cameo Cream with a white top and white interior. I am lucky enough to have the original sales invoice and 2 build sheets. The car was built the 3rd week of April '68 in Wilmington, Delaware and delivered to Kingston, PA. VIN # 446678Y155037.
I have also owned a '68 GS400 htp with the only options being auto trans, rear seat speaker (AM radio) and the Rally Road Control package. It even had the Buick "poverty" hub caps. It was Scarlet Red with black bench interior. ( I had to sell this car to buy the convertible)
What kind of '68 GS do you have?
------------------
'68 GS400 Convert
[This message has been edited by caGSxlr8 (edited 10-25-2000).]

    Stage 2

    mercury 68
The 455 was not available until 1970. The next size up from the 400 cid was the 430 cid. The info that I listed was for the 1968 400 & 430 cid motors. The 1969 Stage 1 used a 400 cid. I think the the largest motor that GM would let Buick,Olds,Pontiac & Chevy install (from the factory) was 400 (401)until 1970.
------------------
'68 GS400 Convert

    Stage 2

The January 1968 issue of Hot Rod magazine did a road test on a '68 GS400 (not a stage 1 or II). At the end of the article they list the parts that are available on the "Buick Super Performance Chart" That chart shows that you could order the parts to build a stage 1 or stage 2 buick. Some of the parts are listed below:
Stage 1
camshaft part # 1383853
Pushrod part # 1383852
Valve Spring part # 1383851
Spring,oil pump 60psi part # 1383854
Stage 2
camshaft (not recommended for street) #138557
valve spring part # 1383851
pushrod part # 1383852
spring, oil pump 60 psi # 1383854
The chart goes on to list the following other parts ( part #'s are listed, i'm tired of typing):
Forged aluminum piston and pin assemblies 11.0:1
Intake manifold gasket
Connecting rod bearings (oversized)
Main Bearings (fully grooved)
Metering rods (6% richer)
Low Tension piston rings
Spark plugs (AC 40TS or 42TS)
Exhaust Headers, 2-1/4" recommended.
Maintain a minimum of 4-1/2 psi fuel pressure at carburetor.
Mantain oil level 1 quart low to prevent foaming.
They said that this (stage 2) should be good for 12.20 @ 115 mph.
I don't think that you could order a GS400 from the factory with this equipment, but it does look like it was available over the counter. I sure wish my GS400 had the Stage 2 parts.

'68 gs400 Convert.

[This message has been edited by caGSxlr8 (edited 10-12-2000).]
  5. Hey Dave@moon,
I bought my '68 GS400 convert from the second owner who lived in Wilkes-Barre. The car was purchased from Community Motors in Kingston, PA and spent its whole life in that area. The car was stored winters and survived in excelent condition (88K miles). It is Cameo cream with a white convert top, you may have seen it back then.
You are right about the hills in that area, the road between the town of Mountain Top and Wilkes-Barre looks like fun in the winter.
------------------
'68 GS400 Convert
  6. TexasGS,
If you have any luck finding a source for the Buick chrome air cleaner cover please let me know. I would like to replace the chrome cover on my '68 GS400 air cleaner ('68 GS's came with a chrome cover). So far the closest to a chrome Buick cover I have found is an aftermarket part made for a '70 Z28 ($65.00), and only a GS person would know the difference.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but did the chrome cover only come on '69 -72 Stage 1 GS's along with the chrome valve covers? Does anyone out there have chrome '69 valve covers for sale?
------------------
'68 GS400 Convert
  7. I have the PO5 "V2" option on my '68 GS400. The original sales invoice for the car shows PO5 as "chrome plated wheels". The only problem is that my car has the chrome Buick style ralley wheel with trim rings. I purchased the car from the original owner and he says that it came from the factory that way. I have seen this same type of wheel (with trim rings) on other Buicks so I know its not unique to my car. I also have two "build sheets" for the car that match the sales invoice. For what its worth.

------------------
'68 GS400 Convert
  8. I think this classifies as rude.
I placed an add in the buy/sell section of this web site for a particular part that I have not seen for sale here. Someone responded to my request and said they had the part I was looking for. I sent them an e-mail (within 24 hours) and did not hear back from them for a week. I finally received an e-mail from them that states that they have a tenative buyer for the part and they will contact me if the deal falls through!! It may be sour grapes on my behalf, but why even offer the part to me wihtout even giving me a chance to buy it?
I hate to sound like a cry baby, but this lack of common courtesy (on the sellers behalf) really pisses me off.
Thanks for letting me vent......
  9. Is there any other way to tell if you have front cam bearing wear without pulling the cam? I have what sounds like a noisy lifter on the drivers side that only gets noisy after the car warms up, my oil pressure is OK 35-40 psi warm.

------------------
'68 GS400 Convert
  10. Does anyone know a source for a chrome plated air cleaner cover (17" dia.) like the one used on '68 GS's? I think this same cover that was used on '69 -'72 stage 1's. The only chome cover that I can find is for a '70 Camaro RS and does not look the same. I heard that this air cleaner lid is unique to Buicks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
------------------
'68 GS400 Convert
  11. What is wrong with BFG T/A tires?? I was thinking of putting a set on my '68 GS400 convert. Any comments would be greatly appreciated .
------------------
'68 GS400 Convert
  12. Does anyone know what years the simulated wood 3-spoke steering wheel with the brushed aluminum horn cap was available in. I know it was available in 1968 and I think in 1969 along with the 3-spoke colored ralley wheel, but I am not sure what other years.
------------------
'68 GS400 Convert

  17. Do you have the rear wheel well trim? I really only need the rear passenger side but I would take both. If so, what condition are they in?
My e-mail is mrtromm@cs.com
Thanks
------------------
'68 GS400 Convert
