I was in the business of restoring wood composite bodies for most of 25 years and I even built a frame for a 1923 Franklin once. You couldn't run fast enough to give me that car, one can only hope that besides the top ribs the wood is all good. Here is one of my projects from years ago.

    Precisely what the seller means by “runs”. Wants to see how fast buyin’ fools can run to get outta there.

    I had a ‘73. Suffice to say it was a colossal sh*tbox. Automatic transmission, the dipstick tube was right next to the exhaust manifold to down pipe connection. The asbestos gasket had deteriorated in the connection. On a hard stop, the dipstick would pop-up, the trans fluid would splash out right into the missing gasket space in the exhaust. Flames shooting out of the hood. I carried a fire extinguisher at the ready. Oh, and I subsequently had the only Pinto in existence with Hedman headers and a Turbo muffler. Problem solved… that one, anyway.

    I’ll offer my opinion, which with that and $7 will buy you a Starbuck’s. I don’t think the price is far out of line, +IF+ the car needs nothing more than a tank of gas and the key. That said, it’s not likely to be the case. I would consider setting aside at least $20K for who knows what? You’ll spend that, trust me. If the drivetrain isn’t 100%, thoroughly checked out, $20K won’t even get you out of the gate. An engine overhaul on this car will set you back $50-large with a lengthy wait for the right shop to do it. Five-grand just to do the carburetors correctly.

     

    If none of this puts you off, check the car out in person. It’s mandatory. Take someone knowledgeable about these V16’s to accompany you. Pay their way if need be. You’ll be glad you did. 

  4. These are terrific tour cars - I had one, body number 28, some years ago. The interior in this one is nice, although the clock on back of the front seat is missing. The top isn’t the greatest and there are lots of details that would be expensive to remedy. The undercarriage looks a bit suspicious to me, as if some of it has been undercoated. The hood fitment is funky. The dash paint is not so hot. Honestly, I don’t think the price is crazy out of line considering condition, a #3, from what I see. The realistic number, IMO, is $40’s, to perhaps $50K, tops. The two most recent sales of these, one that belonged to a friend, and his was definitely a way better car, sold for $98K. My old one sold maybe three years back, at auction, for around the same money.

  5. Sometimes, cars that get posted to this list are very interesting. Some are realistically priced while others are in Fantasyland. This car is especially interesting, because the seller omitted the fact that JFK may have actually porked Jackie - or countless others in the back seat. Who can put a price on historically significant provenance such as that?
     

    As to the asking price? So what if it’s $130K over the money. Any takers?
