His cell phone is not taking calls and he hasn’t responded to email. Is he still around? Need wiper motor rebuilt.

Try your local NAPA store. Mine sent my internal and external brakes to a shop that does heavy duty brake rebuilding and they did an excellent job. No shipping charge either as they have a truck that runs back and forth every day.

Thank you Wayne for your excellent explanation. I will do as you suggested and practice on different known pieces of glass. I hadn’t considered the fact that my windshield could be a replacement and still be plate. The only way I ever going to be comfortable with the windshield is to pull it out and replace it.
The glass shop I’m using is not an auto glass shop and they can’t etch a safety glass logo. I would like to find some way to etch the glass with a small logo on each piece.

By 1932 safety glass was in very wide use.....did anyone not use it? Reo was not the low end market, so I would have expected it to have used safety glass by then.
Ed,
This is what I can tell about the glass I took out. One of my door windows had a long running crack that went all the way through the glass, none of the glass I took out is laminated and when I took the windows to the glass shop they commented about it being plate glass. Also the Model S was REO’s lower priced model.

I edited my post to clarify that I have not removed the windshield hoping that it already is safety glass.

Based on comments from a previous post that I needed to replace my original plate glass windows with safety glass I have removed all six side windows and the rear window. I am 99.9% sure that these windows are original to the car based on the condition of the window channel and the window setting channel. All the windows are solid plate glass. At some point in the not to distant past I believe that the windshield rubber gasket was replaced based on the soft pliable condition of the gasket. The windshield has an old appearance to it and I’m trying to decide if possibly it has been changed to safety glass when the gasket was changed before I remove it from the car. There are no markings on the windshield.
Posts on the prior thread indicated that I could tell the difference by the reflection of an object in the window. I used a large washer to compare the reflections of the plate glass and the old windshield to the tempered glass and laminated windshield of my truck and my 73 year old eyes can’t tell the difference. I get multiple reflections with all the windows. Please tell me what exactly I should be seeing with the different windows.
Thanks, Steve

After seeing Ed’s post I checked out the Element fire extinguisher and ordered two. I may have to set something on fire now just to convince myself that they work. Really don’t want to wait until my car catches on fire to find out they don’t.

Well my temporary repair could actually be considered laminated glass since I have the cracked plate glass laminated between two pieces of clear gorilla tape. 😄

Including shipping I would like $25.00.
Jeff, I’m still waiting to hear from the possible original pulley. I’d prefer to have one with the correct diameter if I can find one. I’ll let you know.

While I have installed a 6 volt alternator in the past, I prefer the look of the original generator and did as ply33 suggested and installed one of James Peterson’s voltage regulators. It works great and keeps the original look. I also installed a diode cutout to replace the troublesome cutout relay. Contact Jim for more information.

Friartuck,
I don’t have an CCCA car and probably never will but just for my knowledge I would like to know how CCCA verifies safety glass in windows that don’t roll down (windshield) if the owner chooses to install glass without the identification mark?

Is this suitable or what would be better?

AACA and CCCA judging rules cite the need for safety glass when entering a judging meet. After verifying the fire extinguisher, glass is the next thing.
Friartuck,
If I understand what you are saying then AACA would be happy if my windows had the above mentioned “bug” on them. Is that correct? Since my cars are not high priced valuable collector cars would replacing all the glass with safety glass have any effect on the value either positive or negative?

I believe that all the existing glass is plate glass. There are no markings of any kind on the glass.

1932 REO Model S sedan. The right front door window is cracked. It is still intact and reasonably secure with clear Gorilla tape. As far as I can tell all the windows are original glass. What should I replace the broken window with?
Thanks, Steve

Thanks Jeff, give me a day or two to see if this REO pulley materializes. What is your price?
-
What is the condition of the bore? Is it 17mm? Is that a set screw I see in the first picture? I do have a lead on one off of a REO but am waiting to hear from him.

An easy way to check the cutout relay is with a voltmeter. With the engine off the battery side should read battery voltage and the generator side should read 0 volts.

Thanks Curti, I’m hoping it won’t be that hard to find but we’ll see.

Jeff,
I took a couple of pictures of the pulley. It has the number 3SA55 and a letter N on it. It is 3 7/8” OD with a 17mm bore, uses a 5/8” wide belt and the hub is offset approximately 1/16” from the generator side surface. The bore of my pulley is worn oversized causing the pulley to wobble on the shaft so I’m looking for one with a tight bore.
Thanks for looking, Steve

I’ve got my NAPA guy looking. Just trying to find out if there’s someone out there that specializes in generator parts.
