I don't know enough about the transaxle to comment much about the shift points. I know the TV cable has some effect on it but I think the governor in the trans. would need to be modified to change the shift point. This is for the mechanical trans. in 88-90. Probably wouldn't help a lot if the engine has fallen on its face 1500 rpm back

Yeah that is one drawback about this tranny, whereas I have heard of people making adjustments to the shiftpoints on other models to get better performance. Actually if you do not have the TV cable adjusted properly on our setup the OD doesn't function right if at all, I know from experience.<_<

because i just heard that the 3 coil pack pushes out more power and not a much lag time

If you are referring to Padgett's tutorial on Magnavox vs AC Delco ICM (http://www.reattaowner.com/roj/repair-information/common-problems-a-solutions/replacing-magnavox-ignition-with-delco) then there is not much difference at least you won't be able to tell unless you hook both applications up to a Dyno and compare the two.

"So, why do some racers bother to switch ignition systems? It’s a little known secret, but we’re in a generous mood - the Delco coils have lower inductance (approx. 3.5 mH) than the Magnavox (approx. 8mH), and provide slightly more energy. Primary winding resistance of the Magnavox unit is 0.7 ohm vs. 0.34 for Delco. Magnavox current limit is 6.7 amps with a 3.5 msec risetime vs. 9 amps @ 3 msec for Delco. This translates to a risetime energy of 8.58 mJ for Magnavox and 9.87 mJ for Delco. The Magnavox current limit power is 65 watts times current limit duration, while the Delco current limit power is 102 watts times current limit duration. Is this slight energy increase significant? Probably not, but every little bit helps."

That's a good job on the sketch you made. I wish I could do that. I imagine a lot of people have ideas about changes they would like to make in the looks of the Reatta. A while back I was thinking out loud on the ROJ forum and this is something I posted. I would never do it. I was just thinking... :)

I have the same. About 6mm gap around the turn signal modules. It looks as if a "baffle" could've been put there, like the ends of the tail light module. I guess we're so used to the closer fit and finish (that's what these dimensions are called) of modern cars, that any gap over 3-4mm looks wrong.

It just looks sooo sloppy I guess, I don't know. I still plan on making a weekend project out of it though just to put my mind at ease.

The gap between the bumper and the trim piece does have issues. It almost looks like the center of the bumper is pushed down somehow. The gap to the hood looks pretty normal so hopefully someone that has taken all of that apart will chime in. That trim piece between the hood and the bumper is just a flexible composite material and I do not know how it is attached to the backing framework but it looks like moving that an appreciable amount will mess up the hood gap. Hard to tell but is it possible the plastic piece front lower lip is warped upwards?

Yeah I am not sure if it is warped or if the bumper is just sagging. If you look at the second picture you can see how there is a large gap between the lights and the fender, so I am not sure what is going on.

OOP'S... A friend of my brothers had the same happen to him, but he had duel spot lights and turned them both on, after the car passed he saw it was turning around and it put on its blue lights........The cop gave him a ticket.

That is what I have always been afraid of since our cops here all have those newer Dodge Charger that have stock extra eye-burning bright headlights. It is hard to tell if their high beams are on.

    I was an Xray tech

Hey Ron, I use to work for Varian X-Ray tubes but yours that you worked with were probably from GE ;)

My story was a bit of happenstance, I really wasn't looking for another car at the time. I was just browsing the car classifieds out of shear boredom when I saw this unusual car, a 1990 Buick Reatta. It was in really good shape the owner said it had always been garaged, and only driven on long trips, no accidents or issues. So I thought I have got to check this thing out, I called the guy and made an appointment. I then made a 50mile trek to see it ONLY, so I thought, I really had no intention to buy the car, I just wanted to see it. When I got there it was still in his garage, which was a car guys garage, covered in car posters and stuff hanging everywhere even from the rafters, there was even rubber mats on the floor. First thing he said was "I just waxed it the other day, in fact I waxed it every month whether it needed it or not and changed the oil". Now here is this 70 year old guy doing all this stuff with a passion. My first impression was, he's not going to sell this even if I wanted to buy it, he was too attached.

I then started looking at the car on the outside first and wham it hit me then and there, I was hooked just by the sleek design and looks of the car. Meanwhile this guy was telling me his life story about the car, like what trips they went on with it and what all was done to the car (Minor Repairs) he even kept all the receipts, which I still haven't gone through all of it yet. Then the guy says that his son is the one that posted the ad and wants him to sell it because he was getting old and his back wouldn't allow him to do those things anymore. I then told him that I am really interested in the car and would like to take it for a test drive, keep in mind I still haven't seen the inside. He said sure so he goes in and gets the keys and he starts it up and drives it out of the garage. I then am able to see the inside and sit in it, my heart was racing, then he says take her for a spin. Once I sat in the seat and put it in gear I decided that I had to have this car, I barely took it around the block because I just wanted to get back and buy the car, it was like I was a boy getting his first puppy.

So when I got back I told him that I wanted to purchase the car, he hesitated and told me that he needed to talk with his wife, which he did for a while. Then he came back out (he went in his house) and told me I don't want to sell the car...at that moment my heart sunk, then he said, but my son was right. The rest is history, after what seemed like an eternity at the bank I was able to buy the car, but then I realized that I had no way to get the car home, I was so caught up in this car that it didn't even occur to me. Anyway after a long day of juggling transportation I finally was able to get the car home with the help of several family members...hahaha!

My Likes: Sleek design and the sporty look, sophisticated interior, the bullet-proof GM 3800 engine, and many other things.

My Dislikes: At the time when I seen it and had it for a while, there wasn't anything I didn't really like, and as for now I can't think of anything to dislike. Maybe something will eventually come up but for now I am satisfied with my Two Reatta Twins, maybe I should change my user name to '90Twins.

The other Reatta story will have to be for another time.

  8. Hey Guys/Gals is there a tutorial or a before and after pictures of the relay harness and headlight brightness. I remember when Daves89 posted his conversion but I can't seem to find pictures and stuff.

The one Reatta I bought has LED headlights but the previous owner did a hack job and I don't think it has a relay (I am not sure how he got everything to work) so I would like to fix all that and put in a relay. Also upgrade the other Reatta but not with LED's just the Silverstars.

Mecum selling prices. The 60K mile Coupe $ 2,750. The 1990 240 mile Select 60 $25,850. A new High and a new low for what looked like a  nice 89 Coupe.

If that is a new low then I must have got a steal of a deal for mine. It had 59,563 miles on it when I bought it for $2,200

Although I wish I could afford $25,850 I would have bought the Select 60.

I almost wonder if the recent weather there has anything to do with it???

No, I'm not trying to draw attention. I enlarge the Font so I can see what I'm typing. 30 years of diabetes, 10 years of glaucoma, and bad glasses. Sorry about that. No intended grandstanding here. I'll just use the regular Font from now on.

I for one actually liked it because of the blurry syndrome I have too  ... You guys are great for a few laughs now and again.

    Thanks

  11. Have you thought of maybe extending out the back and making it into a hatchback like the old 80's RX-7, unless you want it to look more like the Pulsar.

By the way you are very talented to want to take on something like that.

  12. I want to know what happened to the "Experimental" one that was tested? Was it an actual Reatta or more to the tune of a concept car that is in those pictures.

Very interesting Rare find though, might be worth quite a bit or maybe you could seal it and frame it so it doesn't get anymore brittle.

They definitely make a mechanical noise as they are in motion and some thump at either end but there are supposed to be a somewhat cushioned landing. I found I could make mine a little quieter by reducing the backlash in the gear drive. There is an adjustment screw under the cap inline with and on the opposite end from the manual knob. Manually open the headlight maybe halfway and try to push/pull on the manual knob. If it moves back and forth more than 1/16" or so, you can reduce that by turning the adjustment screw in. It does need a little play so it doesn't bind the shaft but it will help if it is minimized.

Sounds Great I will definitely try this... because mine actually move up and down about 1/4" or more

    Thank You

  14. Since all this talk about the headlight motors I thought I would give mine a try since I don't drive at night very often. When I turned them on and off they sounded like a screen door slamming shut and this was with the windows up.

Is this normal or are they suppose to be somewhat smooth and not as noisy?

Could this be an indication that mine are wearing out?

    Thanks

There really isn't a parts list. Almost all of the piping I have done is put together from junkyard manifolds I modified and then had ceramic coated. The turbochargers are swap meet specials or cast off parts, all the old Garrett T3 series, so housings and some parts can be swapped. If memory serves, one is from an '87 Turbo T'Bird, one from an '84 GN "hot air" setup and one from a carbureted '79 Riviera, a real mongrel bunch. I am not after maximum power, the rest of the drivetrain is still all stock, just looking for that little bit extra that is seamless in operation. Sort of a contradiction in terms. While I enjoy the journey and experimentation, I usually suggest one of the supercharged configurations that are pretty well sorted out and reliable if looking for a drop in. GM already did the engineering and did a pretty good job of it. Even that can be improved with some simple smoothing, matching ports, maybe a smaller pulley etc...

Oh yeah, cost. I only purchased one new turbine housing for $230, but that was just to get a tighter A/R for the half engine setup, and not really needed. The rest of the stuff is junkyard prices or free. The most costly item is the ceramic coating for $200-$250 for each complete setup, but that isn't strictly needed either. Always willing to share and help if I can.

That is what I thought, you would say. It's all good, if someday I decide to do something like that I might hit you up but for now all is well.

Thanks for the information! And I think being a Reatta owner requires some experimentation ;) because it is a Journey.
