I got my old 22, T6 sedan REO running this summer, first start in 36 yrs... can anyone explain for me the purpose of the oil can in the engine compartment...?

Can anyone tell me the true purpose of the oil can on the firewall..?

I cannot envision renting this car out for a four hundred mile road rally... were it mine, no amount of money could induce me to do that...
