  1. Thanks for all the help help, advice and education Guys, I've got a couple of emails out to some Spicer u-joint jobbers. I'm hoping someone in the Spicer world will recognize it or push me in the right direction. I'll keep you all posted as things progress. ricosan
  2. Thanks for the info Terry, Sounds like I could do it myself. Is removing and rebuilding this drive shaft/tube a job that a person with average mechanical skill could tackle? Do you know of a source that carries the parts needed for this type of drive line? ricosan
  3. Terry, I can feel a plug in the center on top of the shaft. It feels like it has a slot in it. I don't know how to access it from above as it's covered by a metal housing plastered with lubricant that you see in the pictures. Do you use a special device to get oil into the tube? ricosan
  4. Terry, I'm having a hard time locating the plug. Is the plug in a fixed position on top or does it rotate with the shaft? Can the shaft be removed without loosening the axle and moving it back? Does your drive shaft look like the same model as mine? ricosan
  5. Hey Terry, I learn something new every day! Thanks for the info. I had heard that Studebaker and Marmon shared some parts. I'm not sure exactly where the filler plugs are located. Can you see them in the photographs? Looks like I definately need the felt seals. Do you have to remove the axle in order to get to the seals and pinion flanges? What type of oil do you fill the tube with? ricosan ricosan
  6. It's a 1932 Marmon. You can see all of the lubricant that it's slinging. I'm hoping that I can identify the parts before dismantling. ricosan
  7. Good Morning All, I have a vibration in my drive train that gets downright scary above 45mph! It could be the differential but the torque tube sounds like the place to start as it appears to be throwing some kind of lubricant at both ends (see pics). I would like to have as many of the replacement parts on hand before I pull it apart so that I don't have a lot of down time. I've never had an automobile with a torque tube. I don't have a clue what I will find inside. What parts would you recommend buying before tackling this issue? ricosan
  8. My 1932 Marmon has a torque tube. ricosan
  9. Here are a few pictures of my rear end. There is noise and vibration coming from the rear of the car. I suspect it's one of the wheel bearings and possibly differential bearings and a worn out ring & pinion gear. I don't see any universal joints. Are they located inside the torque tube? I am thinking that this rear end is the same unit that is in the other cars from probably 1930 on. This is 1932 so I don't think they would be putting in new designs for the rear end when the company is on the verge of bankruptcy. I think that they would be using the same bearings and gears as the year before. Correct me if I am wrong. Having said that, has anyone replaced bearings or gears in a late model Marmon? I need the serial numbers so that I can order the parts prior to dismantling my rear end. I'd like to have the bearings on hand when I remove the old bearings. I fear the ones that are in the hub now may fall apart when I remove them. The torque tube needs attention too. I don't know anything about them. Has anyone rebuilt a torque tube? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Still waiting to hear from George at Olcar. ricosan
  10. Thanks for all the information guys. I'm a bit disappointed that I don't have an O.D. but on the positive side, I don't have to repair it! ricosan
  11. Thanks Marv, I'll check that out.
  12. I have a 1932 8-125. At speeds above 35 mph I get a noticeable vibration from the drive train. There is also a lot of noise coming from the left rear wheel. How would I go about locating replacement bearings and universal joints for these areas? ricosan
  13. Thanks for the response guys. I was told by a the dealer that I purchased the car from that it was equipped with an overdrive transmission. Greg, are you saying that the likely use of the handle under the dash is used only to disengage freewheeling function? I'm so disappointed. Is this how many freewheeling autos of this era were equipped? Does this mean that it won't hurt anything if I leave it out of freewheeling all together and run with the transmission in non- freewheeling mode all the time? ricosan
  14. Hey Guys, I've owned my Marmon for about six months now but I have yet to engage the Overdrive. This Overdrive is totally mechanical. A few months ago, the restoration shop I take my car to pointed out that the cable that engaged the Overdrive was sliding in its clamp attached the the side of the transmission. I was able to remedy this last month but I still can't get a reduction in rpms after engagement. When the Overdrive is not engaged, the car "freewheels" but when I engage the Overdrive, the free wheeling is no longer active and the car operates like a normal transmission. I am able to use the engine to slow down, a feeling that I like. My problem is I my shift doesn't give me a higher gear. Do I have the adjustment too far one way or the other on the cable, or am I not following the proper sequence for engagement? I have been engaging the system by going above 30 mph, push in the clutch, push in the lever under the dash, slight crunch, then no more "free wheeling" but no higher gear. ricosan
  15. Can anyone tell me what kind of car this lighter comes from? I don't think it's original to my car. Any help appreciated. ricosan
  16. Is this the right cigarette lighter for a Marmon 8-125? Is it a Marmon lighter? Anyone who can shed some light on this? Thanks ricosan:confused:
  17. Thanks Kaycee, I had my exhaust guy do his magic on my exhaust pipe. What a difference it made. He took it from the manifold to the tailpipe trying to minimize bends as much as possible. It sounds better and it pulls stronger at higher rpms. I would definitely recommend this fix if you find you have 2" pipe. 2" exhaust on left and 2 1/4 on right. ricosan QUOTE=kaycee;1281424]HI My interchange manual lists 2 and 1/4 inch exhaust for your Marmon pipes. kaycee
  18. Good Morning Everyone, When I took delivery of my 8-125 it had a new exhaust pipe, muffler and tail pipe installed. I thought that a straight eight should sound better but I didn't give it a lot of thought. A fellow member of AACA whom I would characterize as "extremely knowledgeable" suggested that the 2" diameter pipe I had on my car was too small. He said I was losing 8 to 10 hp and even ran the risk of possible engine damage. I am seriously considering increasing the diameter of my system to 2 1/4" pipe from the manifold back. I don't think it will do any harm and my engine may appreciate it. What size pipe do you run on your Big Eight engine? ricosan
  19. Ed Stunning! You are right about the white sidewalls as they transform the car. Great lines as well as good proportion. The stainless beauty rings set the wheels off nicely too. I was actually looking for a Pierce Arrow or Packard coupe when I came across this Marmon Roadster. I'm not a big roadster fan but this one really grabbed me the instant I saw it. Ed, I've been puzzling ever since your first post when you said to use chemical paint stripper to remove the paint. I'm trying to wrap my head around this but I'm having trouble. I see myself bending (ouch) over six wheels for hours and hours breathing noxious fumes and working my old arthritic fingers to the bone. I like the idea of having them media blasted since this would not only remove paint quickly but rust as well and I could then immediately transport them to the powder coater. What is the down side to blasting? ricosan
  20. Thanks guys, 1932 Marmon Sounds like a huge job and a pita (paint remover & elbow grease). What is about media blasting that makes it a bad choice? I have 6 wheels to do. Four of my wheels are steel spokes and two are chrome (with paint on them). I had planned to powder coat after removing the old paint. Do any of you have pictures of your painted wheels? ricosan
  21. Hey Guys, My Buffalo wire wheels are chipping and I would like to have them painted. Two of them appear to be chromed under the paint. What is the best way to prepare these wheels for paint? Would some type of media blasting be a good way? ricosan
  22. Is this the original air filter setup on the 8-125? Note the coper tube that goes directly into the float bowl. I don't think that this was original to the schebler carburetor was it? Ricosan
  23. Good afternoon everyone, On my '32 Marmon, I have a cable that runs from the dash to the O.D. unit at the tail of the transmission that has deteriorated and no longer will operate the O.D.. It's about 4' long and about 1/4" in diameter. The exterior is covered with a thin tough rubber coat. Does anyone know of a source for cables such as this? The cable is attached to the push down lever (knob). ricosan
  24. This show sounds very interesting and I would love to see it produced but the cost of restorations should be a production expense and free to the person who provides the subject for the show. ricosan
