  1. Yes.... when my Grandfather stopped driving, we ( me and my brother ) were gifted his 1980 Ford Pinto Wagon - not much value, It was brown with the wood grain vinyl going down both sides of the wagon. The car was like brand new, maybe under 10,000 miles on it ! Well it didn't last long.... my brother worked a second shift job and on his way home ( 2am ) he fell asleep at the wheel and hit a stone wall. He hit the wall so hard, it twisted the body, the rear hatch flew open, tool box and other items went out. Nothing left of the front end, but it was still running, he made it another few miles and the car over-heated.  The car was totaled... All that I remember that night,  Dad came in my bedroom, woke me up, he said " Let's go,  I've been expecting this call ".

Oh well.....I don't have a picture, but this is what they looked like:

  2. Question: a friend of mine out in Nevada, has the same make and model year Impala like I have, Custom Coupe with a small block. A few months back, he went to start up the Impala and it would crank over, but then smoke started coming up from the negative battery cable. He asked if I had ever experience the same issue with my Impalas and told him no.

Would this be a grounding issue from the firewall to the engine,  a starter issue or something else ?

Any help would be appreciate it!

Thank you everyone for all your kind words about Crankshaft magazine; so glad everyone enjoys reading it. And a very special thank you to Santa "aka Tom Cox" for his unscripted vaudeville act. Those Virginia hillbillies are oh so talented.

  5. I'm just the opposite as well..... when I purchased my '69 Impala SS from the 5th owner, I was given a list of the previous owners. I had a name and address of the original owner, but no phone number, so I did one of those White pages search ( the owner had a very unique first name - Albin ) ...... Bingo, the name popped up from Kansas and the town that the car came from. I called the first time and the phone just rang, no one picked up and no answering machine came on. I tried again a few days later and he picked up. I explain the situation that I believe I have his old Impala....after 5 minutes, he realize that I was not some nut, but I actually had his car and I knew the name of the fellow he sold it to back in the seventies. Long story short, I told him that I would send photos of the car to him and if he had any photos, I would pay him to get copies of them.... he did ask me if the car was now valuable, I told him not until the restoration is completed.

I never heard back from him again.....

A while back I saw an NOS one in its box, wheel only, advertised at $7500.

Wow.... unbelievable..  here is a picture of the wheel to my other '69 Impala with low mileage - it's spotless, not one hairline crack at all.

The 69 and 70 Chevrolet car and truck wheels are a special case

It's funny how you mention car Glenn, because my '69 Impala SS has the same issue, but I got a new after market "wood" wheel when I got the car, it's suppose to resemble the steering wheel option for that model year.

    Looks like this:

  8. The original steering wheel on my '69 Chevrolet 3/4 truck has a few deep cracks in it. From what I've heard, it's very common with this year and probably other years as well. I was told that the after market wheels are flimsy, so I would like to stay with my original 17" steering wheel.

Can anyone suggest a repair method that will last or a company that will restore it ? The truck is a driver, so I'm not looking for a high-end restoration, just something durable. I did go on Ebay and found a used wheel for $750....

The procedure to get a copy of your scoring sheet is to send a SASE to Stan Kuikowski, our VP of Judging.  Stan will send you a sheet marked up with areas of deductions but not your actual point deductions.  His address is in the front of our magazine where all the officers are located.

I did this back in October, still have not receive the scoring sheet... really interested in seeing the area of deductions.

When one is featured in a magazine its only polite to buy many copies and distribute amongst your friends, LOL.

LOL.... my wife is already ahead of you....she wants copies for all four kids, her mother, my mother, her sister, extra copy for herself....I'll wait and contact Richard once all the subscriptions have been mailed out and see if he has any left....

  12. I'm not from Minnesota, but my car is. My '69 Impala was out there from new until 2004 when I purchase it. It was purchased new at the Village Chevrolet Co. in Wayzata by Mr. Henry Anderson of Wayzata. Second owner was Ms. Gloria Van Nyhuis of Nevis, Mn. Then a flipper purchased it from the second owner's estate sale and the car went north to Audubon, Mn. I purchased it from the flipper on Ebay and had it shipped to my home here in NY. I know it's a long shot, but it would be cool to find out if any of the members here had known these prior owners or family members.

    Thanks
