  1. I have 2 41 Cadillac grilles. 1 is a complete assembly with the back bars and parking light housings, the other is just the diecast main body. The complete unit has 1 small partial crack on the top bar, but otherwise seems to be in above average condition. The pitting is mild and may even copper in the plating process. One parking light lens is cracked as well, but still it's a nice restorable grille. Usually they seem to be much worse. The other could be used for pieces to repair another grille should the need arise. I took the best pics I could to show overall condition, and applied to a "survivor" type car, it could be used as is with no apologies. I'm asking $400 for both and don't really want to sell them separate. Of course I'd listen to a sincere offer as well.   3. A 1 time bump. If they aren't sold by the end of the month I'm going to restore them. Of course the price will be considerably more, but that will remove any worries about plating costs and such.
  4. Pictures as promised. 1 minor crack on the top bar of the complete grille. 1 lens is cracked, otherwise very restorable condition. The other would be good to section one together if needed. Both grilles, one price, feel free to make a sincere offer.

  7. I have 2 1941 Cadillac grilles. 1 is a complete assembly, no breaks, has the parking lights, perhaps above average original condition. The other is just the die cast, has a few breaks, but could be used as parts/pieces to fill in that one you're trying to fix. Asking $400 for both (both grilles, not each).   8. If you have access to a tig welder you can anneal it with the heat, then weld a nice knob on top of it. Just as soon as the "red" goes away from the knob of weld, start spinning it out. The heat from the weld will soften what was stuck in the 1st place. Tedious, requires patience and some tig knowledge, but almost 100% success rate. I missed a zero in my original reply, sorry...
  9. If I had an extra hundo for every steering wheel I sprayed I could buy some really nice parts. Some are over 20yrs old and haven't "exploded" yet. Yeah, that old form of plastic is doing what call out-gassing as it degrades. Some proper prep and a good bond will seal it up and stop the smell, if the current plastic is good enough to clear over. It looks pretty good and some clear epoxy would make a decent repair of any cracks. If you can get past the smell you'll have it licked. Hey, did I say that?
  10. That smell is real. It smells like a nasty old gym bag or locker room. Horrible! There's not much you can do to get rid of it either, but the steering wheel could possibly be cleared with urethane. It might sel up for several years and be ok to use.
  11. Also, I was quoting from MoToR which was a periodocal that went to dealers and sales agencies. It wasn't a typical car mag as we tend to think of them. I'd be a very happy man if I could find and purchase a few issues of the annuals which intro'd the next model years, i.e., Oct 40 was for the new 41 models. Yes, the Buick had more available HP. Motor for motor, car for car, I'm with Wes. Speaking from experience gained 1/4 mile at a time, 5HP is not much. Add 40lbs per that add'l HP (220lbs more), it's rendered to nothing. I've driven the Buicks too. Fast for a 40s car in anyone's language. I've never "beat one up", nor have I beat on a Packard, but when I stomped that 41 outta OD from 60? Yeah, that left a permanent memory and opinion.
  12. You guys are killin me. I just put my 160 buis cpe up for sale. Reading this is giving me "seller's remorse", but also a bit of confidence. Power? Oh yeah, every one I ever drove had modern car road manners in that dept. I also read in an issue of MoToR Annual from (I think) 1940, and in the text of another car's new model specs it was stating the additional power. Also in that text they had said the Packard 160 was the fastest American production car available. I believe it. I drove a 160 conv cpe in the 80s. Loved everything about it EXCEPT that it was a rag top. I stomped down at 60MPH kickin it out of OD and smiled so big I had to turn my head to finish the grin. I guess I'll give it a little time, but something's come up I must do. If that window closes I'll probably keep it and treat it to a full blown restoration. Some of the info's been nice to re-visit as well. Thanks for that.
  13. That's right, 160 Buisness Coupe, model 1478. Update, 2-21-13 Having gone through a few changes in direction, both personal and professional, I'm offering this for sale again. I've thought it over for weeks now and, well here it is. This car has it's original motor, Aero Drive transmission, several duplicate bit an pieces like multiple parking lights, maybe some extra gauge faces, several other things that were aquired through it's life. The only thing missing is the radiator. ONLY the radiator, as I do have the shutter assy and linkages, 4 grille sides, the core support and shell. I also have the sheet metal filler panel that goes behind the body between the deck and the bumper. The rear curved glass is in very good condition with no bubbles or yellowing. This is a real 160 with crank out vent windows and the garnish moldings front and rear with chrome strips in them. There's very little body issues to deal with. It does have the gratuitous rust holes in the bottoms of the sidemount wells, but not all gone. Still in shape, just some holes. Rust in the actual body appears to be limited to a couple minor holes where the rear fenders mount. I have most of the stainless strips for the fenders and both sidemount covers, aso have the radio antenna which functions correctly. I may hae 2 radios as well, will have to check on that. The 1478 buiness coupe never did have a back seat, but some time in it's life someone aquired a rear seat for it and it's included but not mounted. Again, it's not supposed to be there. Rather than give an "obo" price, here it is: I'm firm at $13,500. I very confident that I could part this out for near if not over $20K, but wouldn't that be a crime considering there's only 2 known at this time, and believe me I've asked and searched via the 'net and ph for the last 3-4yrs looking for any others. I can deliver for my out-of-pocket cost up to 300mi 1 way, or something around $300.00 give or take a few bucks. I have other things for sale, if they go away in short order I my yet hang on to this. Based on last year's offering and now this, I think you can tell my reluctance to sell but I can't keep em all. This is a very rare and fast Packard, a recognized CCCA Classic, an frankly what I think are one of the best looking of the 'wartime' Packards.     One of a kind?

    I'm not certain that it's one of a kind. It's a standard offering from 31, but not a real popular one. The 32 front was not a "kit", and not a ploy to dump leftovers. It was a dealer upgrade to owners of 31s. We can speculate hundreds of reasons why it was offered but I'd suspect that the depression was finally catching up and production was tough in 32. I had a 32 902 5 pass cpe. There were as many differences as there were similarities between the 31s and 32s. The car is kool regardless of how many there may be. Packard literature lays out the best reasons for this style being more intimate conversation with passengers and easier to manage family (paraphrasing). It's worth looking for and reading. Again, kool car.
  15. Go to a book store and get a copy or 2 of National Dragster. There's used trailers in the back that racers have romanced moore than their wives for good to super low prices. Times are hard and many folks can use the money. SOmetimes they show up here too: Race, performance & street cars, engines, engine parts, trailers for sale www.yellowbullet.com These are race forums with classifieds in their menus and sign up is most always free if there's no ph# . I too drag a Featherlite 5th wheel. The deck is 24.6' and another 8' over the box. I had a 144" Packard in there, and leaving 4' ahead of the front bumper I had only 6" or less between the back door and rear bumper (!!).
  16. Leather in closed cars was optional. Standard in most open cars. Most closed cars were optioned that way at the customer's request. A 2/4 cpe would be a great fit for leather. It almost "feels" right in that particular coachwork, especially considering that the seats and panels were the same as the cpe roadster.
  17. I hope you feel better for that. I've dragged Packards all over the lower 48. I've been passed by big rigs dozens of times on the freeways. They push a lot of air and you know it. And if 12 miles of towing a light race car on an open trailer to a local track makes me irresponsible, hey, I can live with that. I can also say that even with the idea that it was always a bright sunny and dry day, I didn't much care for doing it, but I did what I had to. WOuld I use to drag a 34 Packard 12 to California? Would I drag a 55 Packard anything in an enclosed trailer behind a Grand Cherokee? No and No. I have one. I know full well what their capable of, but towing 10k over the freeways isn't on my list. You're more than welcome to assess from where you are, what happened in my sway situation. Unless you were there it's less than accurate to assume anything. I'm glad I was driving what I was at the time and that I had the skill to survive it. If that makes it my error, I can live with that too. Anyone who takes hauling heavy cars in enclosed trailers lightly probably shouldn't do it. If you took exception to my statements, I'm fine with it...especially now. The question was what to tow a 6000lb car with. My answer will always be the same, something big enough to handle it. It doesn't have to be my rig, it shouldn't be a short WB SUV, and it should have the ability to stop the rig in the event of trailer brake failure. A person can get a lot of towing ability out of a 17-18ft HD pickup. And if having a used truck and trailer makes me "the one with the most expensive truck", well that's one for the record books. To the OP, I'm sure you can find someone to let you drive their tow rig and get a feel for what you might wish to do. If you were close to my part of the country, you'd certainly be welcomed to try it, and with a big fat Packard in it too.
  18. As stated by Dave, Packard would provide the customer with whatever they wanted. In my archives at home, buried under several other household items, I have a copy of the "Packard Service Letters" from 1934. In there is a picture of a technician doing an engine-turned crankcase on an 840...by hand with a drill! The caption eluded to how far that their agencies would go to satisfy their customer's tastes and needs. In the big picture, I don't think they ever abandoned that ideal. Their customer service practices alone would make for a very large and very informative history reference.
  19. Towing with a Grand Cherokee is a recipe for disaster. Packard +trailer=10,000lbs minimum. I have a GC and wouldn't dream of towing anything more than a couple sleds or a utility trailer. I have the V8 and what looks to be very heavy suspension, but no thanks. The wheelbase could get you into trouble very fast. It's designed for light duty work and occaisional off road use. Trying to drag 24' of 4000+lbs of trailer loaded with 6000lbs of Packard in any traffic is irresponsible. Wait until that rude kid in his import dives in front of you real fast then slams his brakes to make a turn. What's that short wheelbase going to do for you then? Somthing falls off of a truck or car in front of you. Some granny doesn't see you and you have to panic stop. I tow with a 32' 5th wheel on a diesel GMC dually and I'll never go back. I have towed with a Ford F250HD, standard cab and gas. When heavy trucks pass they blow regular pickups around with enclosed rigs in tow, even with the sway bars. Still, the big brakes were handy a couple times and overall it handles the job. I would occaisionally drag my race car to the strip with a full size Bronco but it was a 16' open trailer and a relatively short trip. If you've ever been in a swaying situation with any trailer you'll remember it for life, and you'll be glad you used a heavy enough truck to save yourself. I was. It got way out of shape on the freeway from being pushed out of my lane and going over a small bridge in a curve at 55MPH. I saw the full side view of the trailer and pickup on it and it took over 1/4 mile to drive out of it. That was an open trailer on the F250. Anything less would have spelled disaster. I think my brother-in-law's hand print is still in the A pillar trim. Plan for the worst case scenario and equip accordingly. Not only is you prized possesion at risk, so are your fellow motorists.
  20. Anybody else notice how much earlier the body looks on the 34? Looks like a 31 7pass touring body. What's up with the disc wheels too? Again, they look like they were retro-fitted to a 34 chassis. The front of the car at the bumper and splash shield still looks 34.
