  1. I am starting to put my clutch back together and the original manual says to put powdered graphic on the two friction mats (discs) before installing. This seems to be counter intuitive. I would think that it would make the clutch slip, however when I serviced the clutch a few years ago, I put way too much graphic on the mats and the clutch froze and would not disengage. When I pulled the clutch apart yesterday, the mats and driven disc were stuck together and to the bell housing. Any thoughts on this? Thank you, OLDMAN PS If i can't fix it this time, I will contact Restorer32 and have them do the work.
  2. Hi George, Just curious- has the head been pressure tested for leaks? Do you have a picture you could post? Thank you, OLDMAN
  3. George- Thank you for your post. A month ago I would have purchase the head, however I was able to get mine repaired (metal stitching) and it is back on the engine and the car runs like it just came from the factory. I think that you will have no problem selling the one you have. OLDMAN
  4. Restorer32, Thank you for your response. The transmission has to be removed. I had the clutch out a couple of years ago when I was restoring my 1922 Oldsmobile. It is back in and I have done the necessary adjustments according to the original manual, but can not shift into any gear because it clashes the gears. I have new friction discs that need to be installed. The throw out bearing is good as well as the fork and the other parts look good. I have a spare clutch as well for parts if needed. I believe that the thrust ring may not be freely moving on the three drive pins. I can do the work, but I am 76 years old and do not feel like doing this task. I appreciate the worst case figure you gave me. I could deal with that. Where in PA are you located? OLDMAN
  5. Is there a shop in Maryland that has the experience to do a clutch job on my 1922 Oldsmobile. White Post Restoration in Virginia has the experience, but they would not even give me a ball park figure on doing the work. I am retired and live on a fixed income, therefore I need an estimate to do the work. OLDMAN
  6. TerryB, Thank you for your help. I will monitor the dc volts at the battery.
  7. Friartuck, Thank you for your information. I really appreciate it. The question that I have is how do I set the amps to 7-8 or 5 amps. Do I use an amp meter? If so, where do I attach the leads? OLDMAN
  8. chistech, Thank you for this information! I appreciate it. OLDMAN
  9. I did some more research on removing the clutch from my 1922 Oldsmobile. I believe that I don't have to remove the bell housing. After removing the clutch pedal assembly and a few other misc. items, I can rotate the clutch release shaft with the clutch fork as I pull out the clutch assembly. This way the clutch fork will be out of the way so that I can lower the clutch assembly from the bell housing. Any comments on this procedure?
  10. I need to remove the clutch from my 1922 Oldsmobile model 43A to replace the two friction discs. I know that I have to remove the transmission and clutch pedal assembly from the clutch release shaft plus a few other items. I know also that I need to lock out the clutch spring with a space block. However, I need to remove the clutch fork from the clutch release shaft in order to remove the clutch. The problem is that there is not enough room to slide the shaft far enough to remove the clutch fork. the shaft will hit the frame. Do I need to remove the bell housing (called Transmission Support in my parts book) by removing the bolts and lowering the bell housing in order to have enough clearance to slide the shaft away so that I can remove the clutch fork and then the clutch? Any help will be greatly appreciated. OLDMAN
  11. Thank you Bloo and TerrB for this information. I greatly appreciate the help. OLDMAN
  12. Hi again TerryB, I just read in my original manual that adjusting the 3rd brush in the direction of the armature rotation increases the charging rate and movement in the opposite direction decreases the charging rate. But I still don't know how to measure for the correct setting. Does this information help?
  13. TerryB, I forgot to add in my previous response to you that when the car is running and I turn on the lights, the ammeter on the dashboard reads Discharges.
  14. TerryB, Thank you for your quick reply. There is no cut out relay on the generator, but there is one on the firewall. There is no way of adjusting it. The person that rebuilt the generator emailed me and said that I would probably have to move the 3rd brush to get the right setting for charge/discharge for the battery. When I asked how to connect the ammeter, I got no reply. OLDMAN
  15. I need the procedure for adjusting the 3 brush Auto-Lite generator on my 1922/23 Oldsmobile model 43A. I know how to move the 3rd brush, but I need to know where to attach the leads of an ammeter. Also, do I need an ammeter of a certain capacity. Any help would be appreciated. OLDMAN
  16. I highly recommend Matt's Metal Stitch, LLC in NY for repairing cracked heads, motor blocks, etc. Recently I sent my 1922/23 Oldsmobile cylinder head to Matt and within a week I received the head fully repaired. Four days was taken up by UPS in transit. I live in Maryland and was pleasantly surprised to get the head back so soon. The price for the repair was very reasonable. Matt's number is 716-289-0843. 17. Pfitz, Great video, very informative. Thank you. Oldman
  18. I failed to mention in my previous posts that the crack in my Olds cyl head is nearly impossible to see. The head was leaking on the outside and dripping down on the engine block. It was also leaking on the inside and getting antifreeze into the engine oil. When it was pressured tested, the machinist said he did not have the capacity to weld the crack. My question is, would stitch welding seal the crack, or should it be seam welded? I thank everyone in advance for your opinions. Oldman
  19. Another picture of the my cracked cyl head that I posted yesterday that I need replacing follows:
