  1. Thanks guys for the clarification and pointing out the differences. It was hard to read but the engine number appears to be 647 69 II5. Those "II" digits  could be 11 as I indicated in my initial post.

    Serial # is 162 547 67

I should educate the seller/dealer as to the proper production year but perhaps keep quiet with the DMV folks when/if I complete the transaction and go to register it. I wouldn't want to upset the apple cart if it has had a clean title as a '52. One never knows with DMV. A lot depends on who is behind the counter :)

  2. Thanks Ben,

Yes, I've seen and test drove the car. Very nice original car with low mileage. Here is a photo. Having no prior knowledge of these early '50s Buicks, my only concern, other than keeping the DMV folks happy, would be if a 51' is valued less than a '52. From what I can gather, mechanically they are quite similar with minor improvements. But I don't know for sure.

  3. I may be purchasing a '52 Buick Super and am trying to verify it is in fact a '52, not a '51. The car's title and current owner say it's a '52 but the body tag on the car is confusing. It reads "1951 Mod. 51-52" on the top line. I found Buick car data sites but I couldn't find any clear explanation behind these particular numbers. The engine number looks to be 647 69 II5. Those II digits  could be 11.

    Any help appreciated !!

  4. From what you guys have found so far, I'd put my money on a Rainier based mainly on those elongated 5 bolt front wheel  hubs. Also, I haven't seen too many round radiators.  I doubt now my father took the photo as he would have been only 4 years old in 1911.  It was in his personal album though. He loved cars. Maybe stole it from a later girlfriend.

  5. Thanks all for the input so far. I've been scanning the internet for a match with no luck. Now my eyes are too blurry to continue. Those squared off front fenders and fully rounded rear fenders are pretty unique, in my searches anyway.

  6. I'd be obliged if anyone out there knows the make and year? Looks like solid rubber tires. I got it from an old family album. Might be distant relatives. Dunno. They sure loved their hats though!

    Thanks!

  7. I give the XIM  a try. I see it comes in an aerosol too. It's  another lesson in patience staying with the old paint systems. I heard there's only about a year left before the manufacturers won't even make acrylic lacquer anymore.

    Thanks Rusty !

  8. I've poked around on the internet for any sources for Velvaseal with no luck, so far.  It sure sounds like what I was looking for. I read many positive things about Velvaseal on different forums tonight. I'll keep searching.  Appreciate the information !

  9. Thanks J. The only sealers I've found are alkyd oil based enamels (Rustoleum primer sealer) or other non-lacquer based products. I'll probably just go directly with the lacquer topcoat like you suggested. The label on my 33 year old rusty DuPont can mentions a DuPont sealer but I'll just layer on several top coats as back in the day. My auto painting experience is limited so I'm going slow. This whole activity is very confusing for non-professionals with all the modern paint/primer choices out there.

  10. Does anyone know of a source for a sealer that is compatible for use over traditional lacquer primer (or any lacquer substrate) AND compatible with a top coat of acrylic lacquer ? I'm re-painting sections of my '32 Chevy with some old leftover DuPont's acrylic lacquer and just laid down 2-3 coats of SEMs DTM high build primer surfacer. I've read a sealer really helps improve color hold out and uniformity.  Before I go ahead and top coat, I thought I'd ask around.

I suspect most people today use a 2K primer first over the bare metal ?  I'm trying hard to keep it simple. Thank guys !

  11. Hi guys. Been cleaning up the basement and unpacked this pair of what I think are cowl lights/ aux headlights ? They were in the same moldy box for 20 years after given to me by a friend cleaning out HIS basement.

Can anyone ID these ? Period equipment ? Both are in mint condition.

I think it's time for them to find a caring home. My only antique is a 1954 Case Tractor and they'd look silly on that.

    Thank you.
