Guest PeterBirtles
Hi, I've just bought a 1938 chrysler royal convertible coupe, I believe there was only 452 of these built, but how many are left. Anyone out there own one of these?I plan to fit an edmunds head & edmunds twin carb set up on to the car when it arrives, I'd been saving these parts for my 40 chrysler coupe, but reckon they'll suit the convertible more. dave38fastback
Hi Peter, sounds like a nice car, post a pic if you can. I have a 38 Dodge Fastback and can only find 1 other in existance. However I have seen something very similar to yours in the 2 months, just cant be sure of the year, could be '37, '38 or '39......I will check it out. Povertycove
The blue one? From Rockland, Maine? If so, your first job might not be to change the carburation, but to work on the paint, and to get rid of the crown royal whiskey emblem glued to the nose. Again, if this is the car, it seems to run very nicely -- easy to start and sounds very good. It's a solid car. The real issues are only cosmetic. The royals show up -- but the imperials --wow. Guest PeterBirtles
It is indead the blue one from Rockland, I understand there are issues with the paint, so I'm far from expecting a car thats instantly going to win any prizes, thats not my intention. You must have seen the car yourself, are you local to it or have you just seen it advertised.
Povertycove
Yes -- I live just across the bay, and went over to take a look at it. I was impressed by the solidity of the car, as well as the quiet and smoothness of the engine. I realized, though, that I would have to put a great deal of money into the paint and interior to bring it to the condition it deserves. I bid about $10,000 less than I knew it would likely go for, the seller's reserve. At 20 feet, you see the issues. I like to get up to five feet or so. Good car, and a worthy project. Seller seems quite honest. Best of luck!'37 Chrysler Airflow'49 Dodge Wayfarer Roadster'52 Lincoln Capri'53 MG TD, M-2'66 M-B 230 SL
dave38fastback
The Convertable coupe that I was refering to has turned out to be a 37, it is very tidy and the current owner will make it an even better car.
John_S_in_Penna
When I see ads that claim things like, "Only 5 left," I don't put much faith in their statistics. Supposedly these statistics come from car registrations, and there are services that claim to tell you how many, but I know my state (Penna.) only registers cars as "1938 Chrysler." The registration gives no idea of the model and body style. You could, however, see how many are listed in club directories--which usually do list model and body style, and that would at least tell you if any other club members have one. Sometimes it's nice to talk to a fellow collector who has the same rare car you have.Sounds like a great car to enjoy <img src="http://forums.aaca.org/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />! jrbartlett
I own a 38 Chrysler Royal convertible couple down in Houston, Texas. Also had a 38 Imperial parts sedan. When I retire in 6 years, I plan to restore the Imperial chassis and front end and mount the Royal body on it.
Guest PeterBirtles
It's good to hear from someone out there with the same model car, I've yet to see one in the flesh. mines been collected from its previous owner but I reckon it will be early January before it arrives here in the UK. Do you have any photos of the car you could post, how long have you owned the car for & is it currently on the road. Do you know of any others out there? jrbartlett
I saw a 38 Royal convertible coupe at Hershey about five years ago, for sale for $30,000 if I remember right. It was restored, cream colored, and from Canada. There was a different cream colored identical car for sale on the Internet about two years ago. There was also a hot rodded version on the Internet.I've never seen a '38 Imperial convertible coupe in person, but there are a couple of them around. You can see a photo of one on Jay Leno's website, in the part where the public can send in pictures of their cars. My Royal convertible coupe is "Chinese Gold," which is a color that looks like it came off a beer can. It was "fixed up" in the early 1960s, but is a cosmetic restoration candidate. Mechanically, it's in good shape. I don't have a picture of it, and the car is warehoused, so it might be a while before I can take a photo. The Imperial sedan is the same color, but is in original condition. It sat in the Nevada desert for 30 years.
Guest PeterBirtles
I'll have to check through my photos, I'm a regular visitor to Hershey, so if there was a 38 Chrysler convertible coupe there 5 years ago for sale, I will have definately taken a photo of it. I realise that the imperials are rather special & very sought after.
